Acer did buy Gateway, but still runs it as a separate division.

They bought EMachines and sold under their brand. They actually made decent laptops (I got a gaming laptop with a Nvidia 9600 video card built in for $798 from them back in the day...the screen hinge is cracked but it still works).

I knew gateway still made monitors, was considering one of their 24" displays that was actually pretty nice. But as far as computers, haven't seen a new gateway since, well, 2000

Oh, now I remember. About 2 years ago I was looking for a 24" monitor and the Gateway was suppose to be a nice once. Then I started hitting the forums, and it turned out to be a complete dud that consistently broke down after about a year. If I recall correctly, they ended up discontinuing the line and customers got gimped on support.

Title is a bit misleading; from what I gather this is what happened:
Micron Electronics was the PC making subsidiary of Micron, making PCs since 1991. In 2001, Micron spun off that subsidiary which then changed it's name to MPC. MPC purchased the professional/educational division of Gateway and Acer purchased the rest. MPC shut down their Tennessee, US plant, laid off most of their employees and contracted out all future PC assembling to a Juarez, Mexico based supplier(Flextronics). On October 28th, 2008, Flextronics suddenly canceled the contract citing lack of faith in MPC's ability to pay. On November 4th, their stock was delisted. Then MPC filed for bankruptcy protection while they look for a new supply source.

you must mean ATI video card then... Nvidia just came out the the 9000 series video cards this year.

My current work laptop is a Gateway, about two, maybe three years old. It has been a rock solid performer, no complaints at all.
