Gateway has been hurt wih that reputation. You'd think they do everything to fix that (they did when Waitt was CEO again), but it seems that has taken a back seat again.

1. Gateway dosnt even make the laptops they sell.
2. Stating all gateway laptops have terrible reliability is laughable and just shows how little knowledge you have.
3. Remember reality is not what you make believe it is.

For those people that ordered this, like me, before it went out of stock, here is an info link at Gateway:

http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/Q106/Magic/5948nv.shtml

So far the biggest con on this is the use of one single DDR2 for memory. This means if you want to upgrade the ram, you will need to take out the 256MB module and let it sit in your drawer.

The biggest plus on this notebook seems to be the relatively compact size, which is not the norm for budget notebooks. Also a 60GB hard drive, supposedly Fujitsu, is very generous in budget notebooks.

Also according to the stats, the battery is very decent, maybe lasting two or three hours, maybe longer. This is also not the norm for budget notebooks.

The smaller size is the main reason I bought the notebook, plus the decent battery. I don't want a desktop replacement, I want a true portable. I already have a very powerful desktop computer.

So when I work at a University helpdesk, and I observe that about 1 out of every 3 notebooks that come in is a Gateway branded one, it's reliability isn't questionable?

Hush it.

I got in on this deal early today.

Question: does this take DDR or DDR2 RAM? Best Buy lists it as DDR2, but more googling shows this same model laptop (MX3215) as using DDR PC2700 RAM. I am unsure of what I will receive. It appears as though I will have a hard time finding PC4300, which is apparently the spec for any who need DDR2. A little help here please?

Taken from Via's website with information about the chipset for this lappy... It uses DDR2 memory.

The VIA VN800 also supports power efficient DDR2 533/400MHz memory modules for high speed memory access with ultra-efficient, low power consumption, helping to further extend notebook battery life.

That's a damn shame it was deleted

Doesn't eMachines own Gateway now or is it the other way around?

I'm assuming since this is a VIA chipset motherboard, it uses the Unichrome integrated graphics?

If so, i'd pass. At least the Toshiba last week had Radeon Xpress graphics built in. Friend got one of those and he can actually play most games on it.

Good deal if you only browse the internet and business apps.

I have a Gateway 4026GZ that I bought from BB last year for super cheap. Hasn't let me down at all. Great machine! I too was a Gateway hater until I actually owned one.

I used to have a Gateway M505X, and I had NO problems with it whatsoever. Granted, anecdotal evidence, but my Latitude L400 before went through two motherboards before I sold it. Yay for in-home service.

I got this a few months ago for the same price. It isn't a bad deal, but it does have some negatives. The biggest negative is there is only one memory slot, which is filled with the 256MB chip. So to increase ram, you need to buy a bigger one and replace the 256. Not a deal breaker, but not good either. On the plus, good battery life for a budget notebook. 2 1/2 plus hours in this price range is good. The wireless also works good. And 60GB drive is above average for notebooks in this price range. I'm not a big fan of the screen, but it doesn't bother me very much, certainly not a deal breaker. I actually prefer screens with a matte surface, not shiny like this one.

One more plus, this thing is lighter and thinner than virtually anything else in this price range. So overall I would have to rate it pretty high for a budget notebook. It feels solid and looks good. I haven't had any trouble.

DISREGARD: Pricematch won't work at OD. Dang it -- that would be sweet!

If you don't mind Gateway, here's a potentially better deal -- Gateway MX6436 with Sempron 3300+ for $549 at Office Depot. Pricematch to Best Buy's $699 price in this week's ad (after $100 instant savings so it's the shelf price) and then send in $150 OD rebate.

Specs:
15.4" screen
512MB DDR
80 GB HDD
DVD/RW
Integrated 802.11g
4-in-1 media reader
ATI Radeon XPress 200m
Integrated Radeon X300 graphics with 64MB (shared)

I'm almost tempted to dump my Dell Latitude D600 for this one. Still debating!
