Saw this through fw:

Take the system to the bare minimums (no monitor, no speakers) to get 969 price

Linky

There's $100 coupon floating around (check fw) and shipping is $49.

So: 969 - 100 + 49 = 918 shipped (+taxes?)

*FRYS*
ECS K7S5A mobo w/ bare (OEM) Athlon XP 1700+ CPU = $159
Microsoft Optical Wheel Mouse = $14.95 after
60GB Western Digital, retail, $129.95
512MB DDR PC2100 = $119
Total = 422

*NewEgg*
Teac 1.44MB 3.5 Inch Floppy Drive $9.00
Enermax, CS-A1QX-06, 2-Tone, 9-Bay, 300W PS, P4, MID Tower Case $55.00
CoolMaster CPU FAN|HHC-001 PURE COPPER 29.00
VISIONTEK Xtasy 6564 (GeForce3 Ti 200 Graphics Chipset). 64MB DDR 169.00

Total 262 + 24 for shipping = 282.00

Had his own copy of OS, keyboard and Burner/DVD combo.

Total coin 700 bucks. Not bad for a killer game system.

Obviously I haven't put this together to test yet since we are waiting on the parts.
But it should perform well, I dunno about the ECS motherboard. Hopefully it will work out well.

Tho, if you were on a budget. If you didn't need a hard drive. Or just had an old 10 giger sitting around. Yeah 10 gig's might not be all that much. But if your just going to play games on it. Who cares? Anyway. If you had your own HD, and got a cheaper MX type Video card. Could probably get it down to 500.00

Yeah, this isn't no 2Ghz Pentium. But, I am sure this setup would kill the gateway deal.
For a gammer the Graphics card will make the difference. And as for as I am concerned. 1700+ Vs. 2Gig that's 300 mhz, you'll never see the difference unless you are crunching a HUGE database then maybe...But under day to day load you'll never notice.

The UPS to building your own system. Usually better parts. Even tho we skimped on the motherboard. A 300W Enermax is way better then anything gateway is going to give you. Gateway will not throw in a G3 with out spending some real coin.

The good in buying a pre built. Usually if something is DOA your covered. And you get a pretty good warranty Gateway or Dell. As long as you don't try to overclock anything you?re fine. Voiding the warranty is not good so cutting holes or other case mods is not an option. You don't have to waste time building and loading software and drivers.
That can be good or bad...

This is the deal of the month for new computers. I finally persuaded a friend of mine down the hall to cancel his $1500 computer order from Dell.com and get this one (a far better computer).

Dude, he's gettin' a Gateway!

Deal is now about $140 more expensive. They used to take off $770 when removing the monitor, but now they just take off $630. That sucks.

I just ordered one for my dad, he was looking for a system.. They had went up in price as said earlier. I called waited for 2 min. talked to a rep, told him how they went up in price. He said it would be no problem honoring the price quoted yesterday. Very kule rep. I am very impressed. First time to do business with gateway. Hope we have no trouble out of the system, like we had with the last Dell system! I will keep yall updated on how the system does, If yall care to know>

Good call. I just remembered though, if you want the deal for $918 shipped, just click on Retrieve Quote and type in 378309 as the Quote Number. I remembered that number from the other day when I helped my buddy order his. That will give you the -$770 w/o having a monitor.

nice, thanks!

Edit: seems that you won't be able to get the $918 price now. They only take off $630 when you remove the monitor.

Okay, my buddy who ordere this got the computer yesterday. Five days after the original order was made (3 business days after). It seems that the people over at Gateway really have their head on straight. They got it shipped out right away and it is a really nice computer. Fast as heck. Unfortunately, the RAM is two (2) 128 MB PC800 sticks. I was kinda hoping for a single chip, but it's not my computer, so I really won't complain, as my friend won't ever need to upgrade.

Because RDRAM still costs so much I think I've talked myself out of this deal BUT if I were to order it. Is 256MB PC800 RDRAM enough to satisfy Win XP? The most demanding things I do are web surfing, ICQ, AIM, MSN Messenger, E-Mail, FTP, MP3s, burning CDs, Word, Excel, PowerPoint - not all at once.

How come it comes to $969 before shipping and taxes using the retrieve code 378309? I thought it would come to $919 delivered with the code.

I saw that also but after you click ADD TO CART it should show a final price of $918.

Thanks, I saw it when I added it to my cart.

My 5 year old Dell XPS M200s keeps chugging along (with a bunch of free telephone tech support a couple months ago). Since I use my computer 95% for internet, I don't feel the need to upgrade.

This does look to be a fine deal though. I priced out a comparable Dell at about $1550 delivered. Even though I am a big fan of Dell, if I was buying today, I think I would have to go with the Gateway for $650 less.

So, for those of you who have purchased this machine (Germyboy's friend):

What kind of motherboard did they use in it? Is it an Intel MVL850 ? See if you can find out from the gateway part number!

I'm guessing since it is a northwood, that means it's socket 478.

What brand are the CD-RW and DVD drives?

I'm REALLY tempted to bite the bullet and order 2 of em. Only thing is, I'm gonna have to call up, use the code, order one, and then maybe repeat the process to get the extra 100 off on both machines...

Also, I think I'd like to get XP Pro on one of the machines. I wonder if they will honor the quote price and just add the $99 for XP Pro upgrade...

Thanks!

-Matt

spyboy - You're welcome, glad it worked. IMHO this is a sizzling hot deal for a prebuilt OEM computer which comes with a legit registered version of Windows XP Home plus other software crap. P4/2.0 GHz, large enough hard drive, decent graphics card, 24x CD-RW, DVD, modem, ethernet, etc all for barely over $900?

Just wish it didn't have RDRAM PC800, otherwise I would have not hesitated in ordering this.

mattlear: the coupon code is for $100 off each system you order... I placed 2 in my cart and $200 was taken off. I haven't bitten the bullet yet, but I'm seriously tempted.

Rossman: In one of the recent computer magazines, I read that unless you're a power user you won't find any noticeable difference between 256 and 512MB in XP... there is a big jump in performance upgrading from 128 to 256...

Thanks for the info but that's not what I wanted to hear, damn you!

All this hardware for only $918 shipped is seriously tempting, someone talk me out of this.
