First of all DUDE YOU GOT A DELL! Ok now that we have that out of the way.

Did you go through a Dell sales rep? If so, which one (name, e-mail and phone number w/ ext.)?

Yes, I just called them and I gave them the Gateway quote number. They pulled it up and matched it. I think any rep will do this for you. It is their policy to match Gateway.

Namlook, did you get the 512K l2? I ask because as recent as last week, on Dells site you could only get the 512K L2 Northwood on the 2.2 chip. Ok I just went on Dell's site again. When you choose 8200 and customize, click on more info. This will show 8200 under "details" in the processor speed section it says with 256 or 512 cache. There is a little footnote "1" Read the note at the bottom of the page, it says " 512K level 2 cache only available on 2.2 GHz processor " Call them because you are probably getting a willamette chip and not a Northwood if it is 2.0 G.

I was wondering the same thing. I called them a few minutes ago and they told me they are only using the 478 northwood 512k on all their 8200 systems now.

Also, and I thinks this helps confirm they are using the Northwood now....I configured a system on their webpage and I saw what you did, it seems to indicate the 2.0 ghz did not have the 512k Northwood option. However, after I finished configuring on-line the part number for the non-Northwood 2.0ghz that was listed on the webpage summary is DIFFERENT than the part number that is on my invoice. The part number for the 2.0Ghz 8200 on my invoice is a HIGHER number than the one that is listed on the webpage when you self-configure. So I think that higher number that is on my invoice is likely the Northwood chipset.

Also when I self-configured this online Dell wants $1500 + shipping for this system which you can get for $918 by pricematching the Gateway quote. Not a bad discount huh?

I came very close to placing an order because bang for your buck you cannot beat this deal even if you were to build your own rig with parts from Newegg.com However I just can't afford dropping close to $1,000 on a PC where the most intensive task I would perform is surfing the internet and e-mail (I don't play games or any graphics stuff).

If I needed a powerful computer then I would buy this in a heart beat or at least attempt to get Dell to PM Gateway like namlook did.

When I called in for the pricematch I think I picked the home user option but I don't think it matters. A pricematch is a pricematch. Dell will give you the same config for the same price by phone.

Did you start out by asking them if they pricematch Gateway when you called? That's what I did. The sale rep told me said yes, we match anything from them. I gave them gateway's config number. He looked it up on the website. The guy said he had to talk to his manager. He came back and offered me a price of $1100 and tried to say that the Dell system was better and that Gateway might not even be arond in a year to give me service. I said no, match it or I'm not interested. He spoke to his manager again and gave me the match. I'd try it again because the guy told me they match any price from Gateway. If Dell can't match Gateway they are going to lose market share. I'd tell them that if they won't do it.

Apparently you were the only person able to get Dell to drop their price within $275 of the Gateway, let alone match it. Dell is saying they pricematch Gateway selectively. I was told by several different reps that $918 is below their cost with the P4 2.0 Northwind.

Apparently, after several ATers called to get the pricematch, Dell management decided not to price match.

For me it's not that big a deal cause I already got the Gateway at $918. However, I would have preferred a Dell, but not for $300 more.

It will be interesting to see if anyone else can get Dell to pricematch. I think every minute that goes by, the odds are against that happening are decreasing.

I'd be suprised if I was the only one to get the Dell pricematch. There are lots of lurkers that jump in on these deals and never post. I also have a hard time believing what the reps are saying that $918 is below their cost. Dell gets massive discounts for all the bulk hardware they use. I seriously doubt they would have given me $918 if it was below their cost. When I called the rep was adament that they will match Gateway on anything. He even made a snide remark about Gateway...when I told him the Gateway quote he chuckled and said "They are trying to sell systems, but we are selling them all!" Sorry to hear that they aren't matching for everyone. Sounds like it might depend on the manager you get.

I love this PC! It's soooo QUIET. My old P2 with Maxtor HD's is a loud cuss! Curious: it is normally the HD's that make the majority of the noise in a PC right? If so, I hope the Western Digital 100 gig I want to install in this puppy is as quiet as the 40 gig WD that came with the system. Anyone know why this machine is so much quieter?

If there is still a chance to jump on this deal - JUST DO IT.

Well I did the Dell Pricematch. I called and asked first, do you PM Gateway?? BTW, the quote # has changed to 416051. Brian was the reps name (1800-274-0696, ext. 57249). He first tried to talk me into the 2.2 with 3 year warranty for a couple of hundred more. I told him that was not a PM. After being put on hold for a bit, we agreed to the below configuration. Note: I missed out on the DVD & CD/RW, but I did get a 2.2. Price came to $923.13 (some tax for my state, VA).

The monitor kicks *ss. I'm sitting at 30% on the brightness scale and it's still brighter than the 19" Gateway CRT monitor I had. No variation in brightness or color top to bottom or edge to edge. CRT's are going to have a hard time keeping up with these things.

If you are overcharged for the $918 GW, keep on'm till they give you the quoted price.

The day before my $918 Gateway PC was scheduled to be delivered the charge was posted to my CC and was $140 higher than the $918 originally quoted. I called Gateway and told them we would refuse the UPS delivery at that price. I was transferred to Customer Service who apologized and refunded the $140 overcharge.

A nice system indeed (replacing a tired 200 MHz Pentium-Pro).

Has anyone else who got in on this discovered some must-do tweaks/updates such as video driver upgrades? (besides the obvious uninstall of AOL software, carving out a couple of partitions rather than having just one big c: drive, etc.)


I didn't see any info in the box about the Gateway WebStore. Anyone try that?
