Good News! They actually began manufacturing my 700Xb this morning at 6:00 AM. The customer service rep said the only thing that maufacturing is waiting for is DVD-R drives and that is not part of the package most of us ordered. She also told me that it will be shipped from the east so only 1 day to PA. Original arrival 2/14. She said maybe even earlier. Also, manufacturing continues to work over the weekend. They are catching up on these orders, your delivery date should hold.

is there any update on whether gateway is honoring this price? i'm debating whether to have a friend jump on this deal (she has a quote saved for her email address) when some people seem to be reporting that gateway is charging more than the quoted price on their credit cards.

Yesterday i was in the chat with the Customer rep and i asked how come me no get vertification email yet and why it take so long! They told me that the reason tak so long was that the MOBOS are on backorder and are suppose to arrive 2/8/02 (today) and my ETA is 2/14/02! They told me that i would get a vertification email when system is done! My dad is saying why is this taking so long! He's kinda mad, like i am, can't wait till i ditch this 233Mhz 32MB ram!

I ORDERED SUNDAY MORNING!

So far the hold on my CC is for $918 plus tax. When I asked the CC rep when it would turn from a hold to a charge he basically said several days. If there is a problem, the credit card company will dispute it. With the documentation I have, there is no way Gateway would win the dispute.

But I am optimistic that Gateway does not want to have a bunch of fights with CC companies, refused deliveries, and complaints to the Better Business Bureau.

When the hold turns to a charge I will post it here.

I was told the same story yesterday about waiting for a part. Today they built it and shipped it. You will get yours quite soon.

Order it! I would have never ordered a Gateway. But at this price with these options even I couldn't beat the price (with shipping charges). Two boxes though not sure what the two boxes are. Anyone get two boxes for the $918 price???

I just tried to compare this one at Dell. $1438 and there is a $50 off out there for online order. Shipping is free and no California tax. You have to take some cheapie speakers at Dell. you can't delete them. I don't think the the cache is 512 but I can't tell. Most of the stuff is the same. Thats $1388 at Dell versus $918 at Gateway and around $64 tax for California. $1388 versus $982. One question. This Gateway has 512 L2 cache. I know that the Northwood has 512 L2 but this can't be the Northwood at this price. Any way to tell if the Dell has 256 or 512 without calling a CSR? Is there much of performance hit between 256 and 512 L2.

I just got my ship confirmation. It won't show up in UPS database until tomorrow, when it actually ships.

Just on a side note, GateWay should be pleased at how many systems it sold on this deal. I am an IT manager at a large public sector department and we get discounts all the time on bulk buys. I figured with all the forums this was on, there is no way they could lose.

For any of you considering ordering this system with the 18.1" LCD monitor, there's a comprehensive review on this monitor on this GoogleGroup location:

FPD1810 Review

Doesn't look too shabby...

The main difference between the Northwood core and the previous P4 core, Willamette, is that now Northwood is built with 0.13µ (micron) production technology and has 512 KB L2 Cache . Moreover the copper material enables the use of thinner wires compared to the aluminum used in Willamette. (To help you get a better idea of the size, say that, hair has 60µ diameter)

So it looks like we are getting the Northwood (512k). Here is a link to the MB Link

Hi kbrock, were you able to determine from the Gateway site that that is the mobo? I am not a techie but I think that Intel designated the Northwood chip as 2.0A vs. 2.0 to distinguish it from the older one. I think I will try to get this Northwood or no Northwood. Is it better to call with the ref # and get the price question out of the way or just order online and cancel if they ding you with the extra cost and won't remove it.

This is the only P4 MB Gateway has on their site with 5 PCI and 1 AGP slot. Did both the 2.0 and 2.0a have 512k cache?

gypsyman I guess that answers the Northwood question. THIS IS A REALLY GOOD DEAL!!! I was going to build it but I can't for this price (shipping charges, etc.). Quit thinking about it and order! Buy just what the reference number has(online then watch your CC). Use your old monitor and get a flat screen when a good price is listed in the forums. The longer you think the less time you have before they pull it. I figure Gateway buys everything in bulk and then marks it way up. We are paying just a bit over wholesale.
