Gateway to Asus to BSOD

Ok, Grandson had a gateway, that i re-installed xp pro about a year ago. Last week he got nothing but a gray and white lined screen, but you could hear windows start up. I figured it was the agp video card. So....I decided to buy a new case for him, and install what i had. Asus a8n sli deluxe, 6800 gt, 1 mb ram, amd 3500, but with his ide 40gb hd, (had all his stuff on it). Now, boots up. get the window logo, and wham....bsod....and circles like that, however can get to windows in safe mode.....
any thoughts

Was the Gateway an Intel chipset/CPU?

Sounds like you went from Intel/Intel to Nvidia/AMD, you ll need to reinstall all the drivers for all the onboard devices.

fresh reinstall would probably be quicker and cleaner

the gateway is history. All I kept was the HD....everything else is new...

you can try running a repair install from an xp disk, but it seems that the hardare changed to much his old install to load (and his gateway oem xp disk probably wont activate on a non gateway monitor) so you may need to reisntall and may need a new os license.

If you can boot in safe mode, you can probably eventually fix this - the only question is if it's worth the time and bother.

Basically, boot in safe mode, go into MSConfig, go to the services tab, hide all MS services, uncheck everything else, and reboot. Does that then let you boot?
