I don't really know why they had them in the first place, but it sucks for the people who worked there. I'm wondering if they'll have sales to get rid of their on hand inventory, or if they'll just send it back to the warehouses to be sold on the Internet.

They were a joke to begin with. All they did was confuse people and piss them off. Too many people went to a Gateway store to actually buy a computer. But you couldn't. They'd just point you to the computer and have you order from their website.

I questioned it from the start.

Yep. We had a Gateway open up inside our OfficeMax back in the day in addition to an actual retail Gateway store open up across the highway. Neither did very well. Completely pointless.

I work at one of the stores. It sucks we're all gonna lose our jobs, but we all saw it coming. Oh well, blessing in disguise IMO.

i bought my computer for college back in 1997 from a gateway storefront. i never went into one since. all they were really good for was to bring your gateway in to be fixed under warranty w/out sending it out....but yes, i agree they just confused buyers

I browsed in one, once or twice, a few years back. I wondered how long they'd be around.

None of the ones around where I am. They were nothing more than very expensive showcases for the gateway products. They had no inventory on hand and you still just had to order stuff online or over the phone.

The only one that I found were you could walk out with a computer that same day was one in Sioux City right down the road from the factory. You could buy refurb equipment that they had a surplus of from there.

In my 3.5 years in the store, I never heard we confuse people. Actually, I heard so much praise because, unlike the sales reps at other stores, we were actually helpful.

Actually, I have never gotten so much customer praise as I have at this job.

and oh yeah, for the last year and a half, you have been able to walk out the door with a computer.

Ok, well then they changed them a bit then. And I guess it's been close to two years since I've been in one. But still...I didn't understand the need. Dell was smoking in sales even without a storefront.

Dell realized a long time ago they didn't need the storefront. (They used to be sold in retail stores before going order only)

Sorry to hear you're losing your job. Do you have anything else lined up?

they might be having inventory sales.. it might be worth checking out..

My mom and my mother-in-law both bought PCs from the same Gateway Country Store.

My M-I-L bought a standard model and we were able to bring it home that day. My mom's was customized and had to be shipped.

i agree.. i went there and they fixed my problem promptly.. they even answered all my questions and go things right.. i threw the girl a curve ball and she knew what she was talking about...

remember she was dealing with a geek.. and when she answered it i was sold..

needless to say.. good deal..

I just wish they werent going to close all stores.. but its the bottom line that's the most for a company.

Very sorry to hear that. It sucks when people lose their positions due to stores that close down. Granted, the idea of Gateway opening up the stores was not entirely a bad one - just that they opened them up a few years too late.

I'm sure one of the executives at Gateway thought up the concept of the Gateway Country Stores and probably made some nice $$ off the idea, too. However, that executive has probably retired and left the poor employees in the stores to mop up his/her mess.

I lost my job with them almost 2 years ago, they made a mistake in my severance pay and overpayed me by $1000. Also take advantage of the consultation with a resume expert, I passed on it but now wish I would have.
