Gave up Gaming

We all joke around that gaming is seriously addicting, but I don't think it's all that funny. I failed my second semester of college because of it. This was a few years ago, and I had the opportunity recently to get back into it. I said no. Once I start I won't be able to control myself; I'll lose track of time and end up avoiding responsibility.

Has anyone else had a similar experience? What are your thoughts on the psychological experiment that discovered a gene that leads to a propensity for addictions?

Addictive maybe, but I had a similar experience with Americas Army in college. We used to play that every Tuesday night for 8 hours or so, sometimes on the weekends and various other times. I think I put in about 100 hours or so of time just playing weapons cache.

I was never addicted, I played probably more than my fair share when I was younger, but as I got older (19 now) I slowly played less and less. Nowadays I don't play games at all with the occasional binge of Civilization 4 if I have a few days off and nothing pressing to do.

1. We admitted we were powerless over gaming?that our lives had become unmanageable.
2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.
4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
5. Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.
8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.
9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.
11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.
12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to addicted gamers, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

You know what's funny? That you failed a semester of college.

Because of gaming? Hell no. Because of genetics? Wrong again. It was because of you. Because you lacked the self control and maturity to go to class and do the work.

Way to take responsibility.

I honestly can't sit at the computer for more than two hours without talking at least a 10 minute break

I played shadowbane probably 2 years constantly with about 6-10 hours of gameplay a day. I kept my grades up because i know thats first. However when i stopped playing it i was told i acted happier and nicer to every one else.

My life has improved after I stopped playing games. I found new hobbies such as playing the guitar and other stuff that was ten times better than video games.

Do alcoholics choose to become alcoholics? You bet. I chose what I got too. Life is what you make it, and I know it. I made bad decisions. I screwed up.

Now... in my opinion people generally won't screw up without being tempted. Rich people aren't as tempted to steal. Gay guys don't have to worry about looking at girls lustfully. Likewise, I believe certain people can get hooked on things more easily than others because of cravings of the understimulated frontal lobe. If you don't have that predilection, you won't have any difficulty saying no. You still have control if you're willing to fight it, but some have a harder time than others.

People are all tempted by different things. I can still remember realizing something very important watching other students play in the sandbox. (Yes, it was that long ago.) I wondered why they destroyed their sand castles at the end of recess. It made no sense to me. I wanted to keep mine and work on it over a period of several days. Later I learned the difference between greed and avarice. What I was experiencing was greed: the simple desire to have more. What they were experiencing was avarice: the desire to gain the illusion of wealth by depriving others of it. I've never understood avarice my whole life; it's never even entered my mind. I've never been tempted by it, and I never have to worry about getting caught up in it.

Let's take another example. I hate watching TV. As a result, I'll never be tempted to waste all my time watching it. Others like it and become couch potatoes as a result. People who hate the taste of alcohol are less likely to become alcoholics.

Addictions are more dangerous to people who really get a lot of stimulation out them.

I even got caught up in Drag Racer V3 for a while. After I got a really fast car smoking the McLaren F1 for slips without even trying, I spent a bunch of time trying to figure out the holes in the physics and how to get times down in the 3s and such.

Are you saying there are people that get stimulated by doing school work? Come on. Everyone hates work, and everyone has something they'd rather be doing, be that gaming, TV, drinking, music, sports, whatever. Calling something an addiction is just a classification to make it sound more acceptable to lack self control.

Yes, but I'll argue that one can have conflicting desires. You can want two different things simultaneously. I want to eat good food that's prepared for me, but I want to save money. I want to have free time to myself, but I want to make commitments. I want to do well in school, but I want to goof off.

Ultimately, in just about every choice you make, you have to deny the alternatives. When you choose to buy a car, your money can no longer be used to buy other cars. When you marry someone, you choose to not date other people.

When you make a decision, be aware of what part of you is making the decision. Sometimes you're surrendering yourself to animal desires. It's still your choice to do so, but being at least aware of it will allow you to more fully become yourself.

True freedom is the cognizance of knowing which part of you is controlling your life.
