In their Fact Sheet on Sexual Orientation (published in 2000), the American Psychiatric Association contradicts the "born gay" claim. "There are no replicated scientific studies supporting any specific biological etiology for homosexuality," the APA said. So much for the pseudo-science of the New Gay ?90s.

We should remember that until 1973, the APA classified homosexuality as a deviant mental disorder. But 1973 was not a good year for morals and values in America, being the year that abortion was legalized and the APA revised its DSSM manual.

Then, in ironic twist of fate, Dr. Robert Spitzer, the very same doctor who got the APA to change its stance on homosexuality in 1973, came back in 2003 and changed his own mind. Why did this formerly zealous pro-homosexual reformer have a change of heart? Because--although he described himself as "initially skeptical"--he personally interviewed more than 200 former homosexuals who had changed to heterosexual through what he called "reparative therapy"!

To his credit, Dr. Spitzer dared to tell the truth about his findings, despite the rabid rantings of the radical gay activists who foresaw the dire implications of this revelation. Dr. Spitzer?s report, entitled "200 Participants Reporting a Change from Homosexual to Heterosexual Orientation," was published in the October 2003 edition of the prominent journal Archives of Sexual Behaviour.

"Almost all of the participants reported substantive changes to the core aspects of sexual orientation, not merely overt behaviour," Dr. Spitzer wrote. In other words, they didn?t just change their homosexual actions, but their unnatural attractions as well!

What?s more, they were better off mentally for doing so. "For the participants in our study, there was no evidence of harm," he added. Dr. Spitzer described these 200 conversion decisions as a "rational, self-directed goal" that was achieved. Not a single one committed suicide through guilt-induced self-loathing.

"Mental health professionals should stop moving in the direction of banning therapy that has as its goal a change in sexual orientation," Dr. Spitzer concluded. "Many patients can make a rational choice toward developing their heterosexual potential and minimizing their homosexual attractions."

Coming from the man who was responsible for redefining homosexual deviancy as "normal" more than three decades ago, that?s quite a turnaround.

I think there's evidence both ways, and I don't think there is a "gay gene," but researchers are noticing similar genetic coding in homosexuals.

Is it that hard to believe that homosexuality could be a genetic trait? Some animals in nature have been found to be "homosexuals" so why couldn't humans?

seems they are both traits but heterosexual is much more common - hence the survival of the species (not that we need more breeding now though...)

Of course it is, just like nearly all of our compulsions and actions are directly based or at least partially rooted in our own specific genetic profiles.

Unfortunately I dont think were going to see any headway made on issues like this for a long time, I find it extremely ironic that the same people who seem to be against gay rights, are supposedly ALL about freedom, VERY ironic, its only "their" preceived notion of freedom, everything else is offensive, evil and morally suspect.

I don't think that people, individually, really care all that much about the issue. People are out to prove that they are not gay themselves, or that they don't approve of this behavior. Not to themselves mind you. There is no need to proclaim homosexuality is wrong or immoral to yourself. If you believe it's wrong, why go out on the streets and picket or go on television and denounce it?

Why, to make sure others are blinded by your words and actions, from your glaring insecurity within yourself. May'be to try to compensate for something you have done, or feel.

Hypocrisy.

wow...you guys are harsh...it is not a "disease"...in the same vain, having a chromosomal disposition that indicates you are "straight" is just as much a "disease" in that case...just different genes...there is no qualification on them.

In any case, this is coming from a very "straight" man, but one who hates not the sexual orientation, but how one outwardly shows it. I hate heterosexual men that are internally insecure and compensate by being extremely extroverted and macho. I also hate homosexual men that feel it necessary to show that by being extremely extroverted in displaying their sense of "gay pride." Can't we just all keep our ideas to ourselves and not worry about what others think or how they judge us. Just be respectful on the outside, not matter what you think or feel inside.

she asked me if I was gay. I said no and asked her why she'd ask that. she said she saw the websites I'd been to and one of them was for 365gay.com. I said that site was from a link in a political forum about scientists finding a gay dna. Then she gave me one of her stupid "I don't believe you" look.

Rather than seeking a biology-based defense against discrimination, it would be more productive to try to understand why some people find it useful to attribute genetic causes to behaviors as varied as criminality, alcoholism and sexual orientation.

in other words.... it's a pointless argument with no concrete solution. too many variables

seems kind of rude, looking at someone's browser history. And it seems a bit paranoid and weird, immediately assuming someone is gay because they visited a news site.
