There is being picked on and then there's being concerned for your bodily safety enough not to attend should you be found out. How often is does the fat kid get the shit beat out of him for just being fat? The vast majority of kids do not come out in HS for these reasons. The probability is that this school will be used by kids with less advantageous socio-economic backgrounds where private schooling is not an option in the event they can't attend their normal school.

As someone who will probably end up paying several fortunes worth of property taxes to the city and county concerned I fully support this limited effort.

If there's a harassment problem in the schools, the problem should be addressed in the schools. You shouldn't have to fund a whole new school for this. It's a waste of tax money and will shelter those being ridiculed.

There are a lot of gay posers simply because they lack social skills. I work on a college campus and have seen a lot more open gayness this year than in years past. I've seen a lot of females holding hands and kissing in public. As cool as it sounds, you don't see that many straight people kissing in public around here. It seems a lot like they're doing it just for attention.

Its not a matter of setting yourself up for ridicule. He's writing in direct regard to those that find it so hard to gain general social acceptance in a clique that it leads them to "go along with" or "pretend to be" homosexual.

Think about it. The gay community is generally very open and accepting. Some people just don't see themselves fitting in anywhere else. So at that point its not a matter of them being truly homosexual, it has more to do with the social acceptance that the gay community offers. I've never met a lesbian or gay male that was a jerk and refused to at least hold a conversation with me. Ever try to talk to some random girl or group of guys at a bar?

Other examples? How about "goths". The green haired chain dragging punks are always walking in groups of three or more. How about the Indy crowd? Less obvious, but what if I don't want to waste hours of my day searching for music names that no one has heard of so I can call it cool before everyone else?

The "matter of attention" that he's referring to, I'm assuming, has to do with the girls willing to make out with other chicks at bars. You think they just sit around making out with each other when no one is around? Cmon...

I've been very stereotypical. I apologize for that and realize there are always going to be exceptions to all rules, but in order to dissect some of this thread we need to at least be critical of social organization, if anything.

As for the gay-friendly school, its just sad that there are people out there who believe that because a community has been so thrashed by society that they need to seek refuge outside of a typical setting.

All schools should be considered "gay-friendly" schools.

While it's sad that in 2008 we are seeing this kind of behavior it certainly does happen. The only openly gay kid in my HS got the shit beat out of him and his life threatened to the point where he had to transfer schools to get out. Another kid was sodomized with a shampoo bottle as a swim team hazing event and then subsequently became known as a 'lovely human' around school, he also changed schools shortly after.

I know I didn't dare come out while I was in high school to anyone, it wasn't until college that I really became the person I wanted to be; myself.

I'm torn on this issue personally.. I can see benefits and down sides to it.

I'm straight as an arrow, but in college, I went to LGBSA meetings and hung a "Safe on Campus" sign on my door. I became involved with plenty of groups. I never had any gay friends in high school, but found them to be the NICEST people of any "group" at college.

This would have DRASTICALLY increased my chances of meeting a girl that shared my core values. (basic human decency, which is lacking in MOST high schools, due much to the nature of just being a teenager)

This program would start slow, and requests to get in would increase rapidly. It would overtake "regular" school quickly. "Regular" schools would follow suit. The majority of student would make the intolerant students the minority, and they would be much more unlikely to act out. Saying that no-one would want to go to this school is stupid. Anyone who can think clearly would go in a heartbeat.

If you don't like gays because of your religion, that's YOUR problem. Those gays may not be Christians, so what business is it of yours? Don't want gays to marry? Do you also not want straight Buddhists to marry? Why not? They aren't Christians. Aren't they an affront to Christian marriage just as much?

Sacred of them in the gym room? Guess what. They've always been there. They're not going to hit on you. Just as you don't hit on EVERY girl. Get over yourself.

Big difference between being "picked on" and Biblically sanctioned murder where the killers have barely even got a slap on the wrist historically. Not to pick on just the Christians. Other irrational religions also condone murder of "sinners".

It's too bad that we put such a low priority on the funding of our schools. Colleges don't seem to have such a problem. It easy to see why colleges are much more accepting of other's lifestyles. The cliques are broken apart and just about everyone starts at the beginning again. It's a lot easier to be accepting when you don't have clique based group-think and try to make friends with EVERYONE.

Of course, look at the athletes and frats who have never been outside of their circles, and you see the same ignorant behavior. Luckily, they are the minority. As more kids go to college, I think we'll finally get above this tiny hurdle.

Schools like this would be a path to social evolution. Unfortunately, the cost will probably be to high to get this off the ground.

This whole gay thing is really interesting. If I was a high school lad. In todays screwed up world. I would demand individualal dressing rooms and such . The idea of some other guy sizing me up in the showers . Is disgusting and immoral. LAWS MUST BE MADE. I am sure ya can see were this is leading.

You will find the reason for 90% of our problems. Divide and conquer. Its always worked and always will . This country has never been more divided except the slavery issue. Which by the constition should have never been an issue to start with.

Yep . My brother is a wonderful person to talk to . Women really like him . I being the oldest sibbling . New he was gay since he was 11. My wife lol at me . She doesn't lOL about it any more. My other brother has turned against the other. What an ass. Like Scott being gay reflects on him.

When Scott finely came out . A few were shocked. I tried telling the folks he was gay . But they only ranted and raved I was insane . Poor me.

Than when he told them . Dad was very quick to point out that ist's all in the genes. We got in to a hell of a fight over it. I told him flat out . I said I watched how you treated one over the other. I being 9 years older than the second son .The hater. Seen clearly what happened . Scott was fine up until he was about 9 . Thats when I seen the change.

My poor youngest brother. Looking for a father figure. It may be in the genes but something causes it to come out. I watched and seen how it happened in my family .

This genes thing really bothers me . Its an excuse only. If it was real. Than all Murders and thieves and liars ect. ect. Can use the same gene excuse. God gave man something very speical . It called FREE CHOICE. WE choose its not pushed on any off us . If any believe differantly your fools.

Its always harder to right than wrong .

I told Scott I was proud that he had the guts to finely admit his choice. I told him it didn't change how I feel about him. I also told No. 2 son he was a complete self centered ass whole.

I did tell Scott tho . Not to act any differantly in public than he did befor . Because that could hurt our relationship. I told him he made his choice and I could live with it. I also told him if he openly showed and acted differantly it could influences others to make the the wrong choices. That I can't live with . He knows me well . He knows what I ment. It would be swift and deadly mistake. Its unnatural act that goes against nature.
