Hi,

I have an AMD K6-2 450 MHZ computer and considering to buy a GeForce MX card with tv out. I have 128 MB or RAM and all on a EPoX EP-MVP3G2 VIA APOLLO MVP3 CHIPSET ULTRA DMA66 SUPER SOCKET 7 ATX FORM FACTOR 1xAGP/5xPCI/2xISA/3xDIMM. I think it is only an AGP 1X slot. Would the MX work on this board??

Thanks for the answers,

Vic

I don't see why it wouldn't work, considering that the MX is low power consumption and all. But, just to be on the safe side, you might wanna buy from some place that has a favorable return policy.

Same as CyberSax said. As for performance, it should give something in the region of 1200 for 3DMark2000 (note this is only an estimate - it could be higher). Not sparkling compared to those who are pulling 7000, but certainly playable in games like Quake3 and Unreal Tournament

I have a GeForce MX for my P2-400@496 and it rocks. Definitly the most sensible upgrade for a lower end CPU system, since the hardware T&L helps compensate for it somewhat.

for you it might be overkill, probably more cost effective to gety a V3 right now till you get a CPU upgrade, with the 30$ rebate on V3's right now they can be had for under 50$.

Nah, I wouldn't recommend it. I've seen P2-300 machines with RIVA TNT 2's (which are like Voodoo3's in terms of performance) upgrade to GeForce cards and experience a world of difference.

Yeah, go with the MX, and I think your chipset supports AGP 2x , I would'nt buy a TNT2/3dfx V3 . There just too old.

Your system would get higher than 1200 3dmark 2000 with a GF2 MX. I think an MX would be a great upgrade.

But would a GF 2 MX perform that well on a K6-2? I have to believe the processor would seriously hold it back. The floating point performance of the K6-2 is just not that impressive. A PII 300 would probably outperform a K6-2 450 in 3D gaming. I have heard that the K6-2 best video card option is V3 2000, and that anything more is a waste of speed and money for that series of processors. But, hey, it's your money and maybe it will work great, and maybe you won't have any of the driver, compatibility, and poor quality 2D issues that others have been enjoying with their Geforce 2 MX cards. Me, I am still pondering a GF 2 MX to replace the doggone Voodoo 3 3000 PCI card that works so reliably in my systems. So far I haven't been able to justify the attempt. It will probably happen eventually, the potential increase in performance is hard to ignore. And I am a "bang for the buck" kind of guy

Well it's like this. I have an k6-2 450@500, asus p5a-b, 128mb generic pc 100,sb vibra, 2x quantam hdd[5400 rpm].wITHtnt2m64 @1152x 864 3d mk2000 score of 872[slooow], my old setup. i put in Asus v7100t gf2mx and now get 2095 using same res. I think the hardware t&l spec i test it at is the fastest one as when i use amd 3dnow optimisation all i get is around 1400. So the card is a definite improvement, i will be going abit k7t and duron 700 soon so see what score i get then

i think a MX card would be a good upgrade , however your cpu will definately be the limiting factor. (once your cpu hits its limit it won't matter what video card you use as they will all wait for your cpu).

Once you upgrade your cpu (hopefully to a duron) then you will see this card fly!

Asus's V7100 supports 1X, 2X and 4X...............it's only money ....go for it and see what happens the card will always be good in future upgrades

(once your cpu hits its limit it won't matter what video card you use as they will all wait for your cpu).

That's not entirely true. If your video card is a GPU (like a GF based board or the Radeon) it will offload some work from the CPU and give you a nice performance boost. The GF2 MX really shines with low end CPUs. In contrast the Voodoos are really crap with low end CPUs because they aren't GPU based boards. There are some low-end CPU benchmarks here.

However you have an extra problem because of the K6's poor floating point performance. I think you will find most 3D games will be unplayable with it anyway, no matter what video card you put in there. You really do need a better CPU.
