Another vote for Geforce before it moves to the right forum.

It depends on what GeForce and what games you play and what resolution (or AA setting) you play at.

If you play at 1280x1024 or with AA, the V4. If you play in lower resolutions probably the GF.

Anand's review of the voodoo 4 4500 the geforce2 mx beat the voodoo in every benchmark. Dave may have some tweaks that you can use, but since i have never used the voodoo, i don't know. Going by just benchmarks I would say go with a geforce2 mx, or geforce 2 ddr since that seems to be the price range you are in.

With the latest V4 drivers (without HSR ) they are basically identical in performance in the upper resolutions (especially with high detail in Q3). With using some of the options the the advanced tools the V4 can edge out the MX.

well if he's thinking geforce1 sdr, i'd take the v4 4500. The 4500 with the 1.04s no HSR is pretty close to the gf2mx , and it has good 2d. And well $50 diffrence seperates the v5 and v4 in forsale/trade (pretty much as cheap as it gets) and well if you aren't hard core the v4 is a great card, cheapest card in the line is always the best value. i'll probably get the single chip rampage too when it comes out. I mean it does run every game, and 1600x1200 is razor sharp. I think 3dfx even tries to market the v4 as a SOHO card.

now that i think of it, a gf2 ultra is probably the worst card ever. You could buy 5 generations of the "cheapest" card and be perfectly fine. And to think if you sell your old cards you'd probably be spending way less than a gf2 even if you sold the gf2 ultra.

Lets meet our current contenders in the Video Card market

GeForce SDR
GeForce DDR
Voodoo3 complete series
Voodoo4 4500 AGP/PCI
Voodoo5 5500 AGP/PCI
GeForce2 MX
GeForce2 GTS 32MB
GeForce2 GTS 64MB
GeForce2 GTS Ultra
GeForce2 Pro
ATI Radeon 32MB
ATI Radeon 64MB
ATI Radeon AIW

Ok, I know it's a long list with the fastest cards on it.

As far as a card under 150.00 The ATI Radeon 32MB DDR comes on top since it can be had for less than 140.00 with a little searching.

so here is the value stack:

1 ATI Radeon 32MB DDR
2 Voodoo4 4500 AGP
3 GeForce2 MX
4 GeForce1 SDR
5 Voodoo5 5500 AGP
6 GeForce1 DDR
7 GeForce2 GTS 32MB
8 GeForce2 GTS 64MB
GeForce2 Pro
9 ATI All-in-Wonder-Radeon
10 ATI Radeon 64MB
11 GeForce2 ULTRA HORRIBLE VALUE FOR ANYONE

The reason the GTS Ultra is a horrible value is becase 500.00 IS TO MUCH FOR A FRIGGIN VIDEO CARD TO PLAY A GAME WITH!

Ok, and the winner of the value market is **DRUM ROLL**

THE ATI RADEON 32MB DDR

a geforce ddr is still pretty expensive actually, its not really that good a value at all, its on the $135 range i'd put the v5 ahead, and also the AIW radeon is around the same price as the gf2 64mb , so its probably better, oh yeah and you forgot gf2 pro, which would probably be right in front of the ultra

Check out Matthew Witheiler (of AnandTech) Budget Video Card Comparison - November 2000

Gives you a good comparison between the Geforce MX, V4 4500, and ATI Radeon SDR.

(BTW, all these cards are 1.5v compatible, so if you plain on upgrading to a P4 later on, you don?t have to worry about it not working. If you?re not planning a upgrading to a P4 at a later date then it really doesn?t matter, until AMD decides to do the same.)

Dave:

What's so special about this resolution? Anyway the V4 is pretty much pounded by a Radeon or the GF2 MX in any resolution. Speedwise the V4 cannot be recommended to anyone, even for Glide games.

The only reason I am considering one is because I'm not entirely keen on a V5 and I want to stick with 3dfx for their rock solid hardware and drivers.

With the latest V4 drivers (without HSR ) they are basically identical in performance in the upper resolutions (especially with high detail in Q3).

Would you care to elaborate on this? What sort of performance boosts are given by the new drivers (no tweaks allowed)? If you're not making this up this is very good news. In the current benchmarks the V4 loses bigtime in low res and absolutely dies at high res.

jdaves:

1 ATI Radeon 32MB DDR
2 Voodoo4 4500 AGP
3 GeForce2 MX

Eh? The MX should be at the top of the list and the V4 should be near the bottom, especially with the current price tag.

This is a very odd thread. The 3dfx supporters seem to be sugar-coating the lack of power the V4 has. Like I said, I'm all for a V4 but its performance sucks bigtime compared to the other competing video cards.

Yeah, I keep getting emails from them telling me threads have been moved.

The V4/5 feature set sucks too... no TV out even. Still, if you can get a 5500 for $150 then do, that's a good deal.

*nobody has thought to mention that old Glide games only play on Voodoo. And the Voodoo FSAA can be applied without compatibility problems with anything. Don't bother with the V4, get the V5!

Bonkers, you mind actually contributing something to the discussions instead of just trying to get your post count up? Second thread I have read in a few minutes where you just popped in and said "Go with xxx company, cheers!" We have an off-topic forum for posts like that.

Anyway, I seriously would look at moving up to a Radeon 32mb DDR or a V5 5500. Both can be had for less than $160 if you know what to do (Hint: search the hot deals forum). I got my Radeon 32mb DDR for $145 shipped from buy.com after a coupon. The V5 5500 can be had for about $150 - $160 depending on which one of the deals you choose to try.

The performance you will get from a Radeon or V5 will surpass an MX or V4 if you play in high quality at 1024 or higher rez, not to mention keeping you more happy until the next generation of cards falls into a better price range.

For budget video adapters with performance, the only option, IMHO, is the Geforce 2 MX. Nothing else comes close for around $100. I would consider the Voodoo 3 for the super budget $50 to $75 mark, as it provides decent speed and great compatibility with a PCI interface. I think that once you go over the $140 mark, you are more into mid-range cards where the battle gets much more interesting with the Radeon, voodoo 5, Geforce 256 DDR and maybe Geforce 2. Unfortunately, I am not yet to that level in my available options And the Ultra crowd of $300 plus cards, well I am not sure they would be considered even if I won the Lottery! (Well, maybe if it was a big lottery )

Just get a V5 5500. If you are going to go with the budget card, get the Radeon 32mb DDR or the MX Twinview.

I noticed that Anand is going to run another test of the 3dfx cards w/ newer drivers, and they are asking for opinions on what tests we want to see. Personally, I very much looked forward to the V4 4500 when it was announced, but due to its delivery delay and lackluster performance, and especially it's non-competitive price, I gave up on it. If the new drivers make that big a difference, even w/out the beta HSR tweaks, I might be tempted again....

Dave, I'm still waiting for your answer. What sort of performance boosts do the 1.04 drivers give to a Voodoo 4?
