Just one more week. I will be picking it up in town on my lunch break, and then will have to force myself to go back to work for the rest of the day.

This style of game is getting seriously played out to me. It was ground-breaking and incredible in 2006...but since the roughly 75+ games since that have emulated the third-person, over-the-shoulder, contextual cover-taking since, even Gears is getting stale.

I'll wait until its in the bargain bin.

Wait what? 3rd person over the shoulder ground breaking 2006? Yea Gears wasn't a ground breaker w/ 3rd person shooters atleast not for its over the shoulder view. I'd like you to check out some older games rofl.

Furthermore the thing that made gears groundbreaking was the significance of hop n pop gun fights and the body explosions, and making a shotgun actually require skill.

I'd wager I've been playing games far longer than yourself. But you knew what I meant...

As one of the first games to offer the contextual cover taking mechanic. The ability to "stick" to cover, and slide between cover. Obviously it wasn't the first 3rd person shooter. Hell, the first Rainbow Six could be played in 3rd person. But the Gears style was still quite new and exciting in '06.
It has since been done by countless other games. Not as well, usually, but that entire style of predictable waves of enemies, open courtyards with convenient waist-high concrete barriers, etc. I'm just just burnt out on it.

For the record, I've purchased every single GoW on launch day too, so I think I'm a pretty decent fan of the series.

The review from IGN is up and they really liked it. It scored a 9.2 I believe. I can't link it from work, but I did notice a line in their about the final boss being a small let down after the 10 hours before it, so that is a pretty nice length for their campaign.

I am really loving this game. The campaign is so much fun, and I like how they break it up into little sections. It keeps the action coming. Over run is pretty fun, but the teams I played with didn't use any strategy, so we got owned. Online is cool too, my only concern about it is the fact that shotguns are primary guns too, so you have to choose between a lancer and a shotgun, but it felt like they increased the lancers power in medium range. Plus you can pick up someone's shotgun and drop your pistol, so it still works out. One night in and I'm glad I got this game.

Just started playing last night. Very different from the other 3 in campaign so far. Some good, some rather frustrating. The basic game play mechanics seem to punish you for being an old hand at them. Better for players getting their first taste of the franchise me thinks. Keep wanting to press Y instead of D-Pad when prompted. Weapons I have used to kill thousands upon thousands now have a different reload timing. No more switching between weapons with D-Pad. Sometimes I think I can use the raise up and look over cover option, but it does not work.

Things I dig- shield+any gun. Areas where if you try to stay in cover you will get overrun. Just the whole being bummed rushed by a bunch of locust.
The part where you can choose the poor visibility and the Therons with cleavers and Maulers storm you, is the best single fight I have ever been in, in campaign mode for a Gears game.
New weapons to master. Sawed off reloading quickly.
The narration and "flashback" style of storyline
Only played about 1 1/2hrs or so, but having fun. Again, just need to get used to all the fundamental changes to the gameplay. Keep having a Homer moment by wanting to switch to pistol and going "doh!"

I finished the main campaign last night and thought it was really good. I'll run the aftermath section some time this weekend.

Was the last boss or ending a big letdown or anything? Haven't gotten the game yet and haven't had the urge to get any new games these days until a bunch of people have played it.

It took me and a friend about 8 hours on normal. We did all the declass missions. I didn't think the final boss fight was a letdown at all.

Yeah but we are both gears veterans and only had to restart a couple times. Once we get a couple more people, we are going to run through on insane.

I am loving overrun mode on this game. It rewards, wait for it, teamwork! I don't know when I'll get around to playing the other modes, but I'll be on overrun for a long time.

Got the game, it's really not good. Dont buy it.

thanks for that very informative opinion.

it is weird i've been checking redbox by my house and work since this game has been released, and there hasn't been 1 single copy of it in stock anywhere.

Why is that weird? I would think that most people who are interested in single player would go the redbox route because you can easily beat the campaign in one weekend rather than shelling $60 for 6-8 hours of gameplay.

Good or bad, any big name release is going to be rented like mad at redbox. The fact that you can run through the game on one rental is just more incentive to do so with this one.

because i've been renting games at redbox for a while and this has never happened. i have 50 redboxes within 6.5 miles of where i live and it is juts odd that none of them have had it at all and i've checked like a couple times a day since.

didn't happen with god of war or tomb raider of recent releases. even if it wasn't at one of the ones down the street, it would be a couple miles away.
