I'd consider the DVD player to be a moot point considering 99% of people already have a DVD player. The PC media connectivity I also find to be an extra I'll never use. MOST of the 360's games I've seen so far seem uninteresting (although GoW looks fantastique, and CoD 3 looks promising)
I was reading my old roommate's PC magazine (they still get delivered to my apartment even though he moved to TX ) yesterday and they were comparing the PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii. Something I didn't know was the difference in max resolution:
Wii: 480p
Xbox 360: 720p
PS3: 1080p
Also, the Wii can't play DVD movies, only games. The Xbox 360's new "HD DVD" will not let you play HD DVD games (so don't expect that) only movies. Once you add that $200 player though (which is technically a good price for an HD DVD player) it's costing you just as much as the gruntier PS3 (which will have Blue Ray games).
They say the PS3's online functions are no where near as refined and "grandiose" as Microsoft's XBL.
Check out the article here.
Yeah, I know that most people already have a DVD player. But I'm using the Xbox360 as my current DVD player, because it's quality better than my last one (which was good to begin with). Add on the $40 VGA cable and you can upconvert your DVDs all the way to 1080p if you like...and I've read that the upconversion quality is supreme.
I also use the windows media connect for music quite a bit. Nothing better than great music and visualizations on my HDTV in the living room when having people around for parties.
The HD-DVD drive will only be a consideration (for me) if that format wins out and movie prices drop. However, atleast people have access to the gaming-machine for $200 cheaper than the PS3 if they don't care at all about HD-DVD. And as you said, $200 is currently a good price for a HD-DVD player. PS3 may use Blu-ray discs for game content, but so what? Surely Xbox can just span the content across multiple discs...and from what another thread said about PS3 loading times, it may be just as fast to swap out a disc. Gaming resolution is moot because both can do 1080p now (extra moot for me since my HDTV only does 720p/1080i).
And then, as you said, XBLive already has such a refined and fluid system with so much offered already (HD movies and TV shows now too) and certainly more to come.
So yeah, it certainly depends on your priorities, but I'm definitely using my the machine for everything it can do. Several great games (imo), great DVD player (which gets rid of one extra piece of hardware in my entertainment center), Media Connect, XBLive and HD movies rentals, and depending on which format wins out, a reasonably priced HD-DVD player add-on....yup...it's wonderful.
