So Gears of War is on sale this week and I'm thinking of giving it a shot. Curious of the SP campaign is very long and if the maps are open (like farcry) or narrow close tunnels (like just about everything else )

It's linear and about the norm for length these days. I thought it was a good SP campaign and worth it for maybe $20. What's the sale price?

I'ts short, uninvolving, and does not challenge you at any point.

Don't waste your time or money.

It lasted about 2 hours for me. It would have been longer but I got sick of its repetitive and boring gameplay and gave up.

$15 I think.

My beef with the SP is that the story is not really fleshed out. You only get vague hints about the back story and what's going on.

Sounds like you like Far Cry, so do I. I gave GoW (PC) a try when it came out and ended up hating it. I was actually very excited that it was being ported over, but the gameplay is so boring and is the same thing over and over. And yes, it is very linear. I didn't try multiplayer as I tend not to play online for most games.

Same here, it was quite undynamic and unengaging

Yea I liked far cry. The best thing is going back to play the individual maps. You can run and gun or sneak and crawl. Only bad thing is the game lacked night day cycles so you could pick which approach

I thought GoW was pretty mediocre, I didn't understand the hype for it. (Nor do I understand the hype for Halo either )

GoW is a lot of fun playing co-op If you have a chance, try to finish it that way. Otherwise I'd say the game is a bit above average. Still fun. but nothing special.

Meh, didn't really like GoW. It's not even that pretty - it's the same grey/brown textures over and over. And it's really repetitive - find cover, shoot, go to next spawn point.

i'm still playing it (act 4 - hardcore mode), and it's a lot of fun. I would be playing it co-op with my friends on live
if they all hadn't either quit, had a PS3 instead, or beat the game. It's a good game in my opinion and you should definitely buy it if it's for
15-25 bucks (bought it for 20 on eBay).
For multiplayer, the great players dominate the games while the mediocre / bad players can't really do anything since the fights aren't big (4v4 max)

I don't know what all the hating is about. I really liked the game.

The game was set in a war ravaged post apocalyptic world. So if everything looked similar (which I don't believe it did) I could give it some leeway. Yes its a linear game, which does not automatically make it bad, they do give you several opportunities to choose a particular fork in the road. Each offers a different combat scenario but they do ultimately end at the same location.

While not painfully difficult it did offer a decent challenge at several points, I urge those saying other wise to make sure they try a higher difficulty level. As easy really does have a negative impact on challenge.

And those stating repetitive I question as well. Yes its a shooter, and if you classify a game as repetitive because all you do is "shoot stuff" I find that sad. There was an interesting mix of battles some involving high and low ground, varying levels of cover, several lite puzzle encounters, also alot of encounters had several paths to take to be successful (head on attack vs a side way that may lead to the enemies vulnerable side). It was no more repetitive then Crysis, Far Cry, Mass Effect, etc.

I will concede that it does lack detail in the history of the world and war. Since the main character has an established history in that world it is strange that you don't get alot given to you. But ultimately it doesnt really matter. You are released from jail to complete a difficult mission, as you proceed there are problems that you have to solve\go around to get to that objective. Then things don't go as planned and a new objective comes forth. Now I know that the PC version had a few additional levels that were missing from the consoles so maybe some of the story complaints are coming from console experiences.

All in all, I say its a good to really good game and definitely worth a play thorough (though I would avoid 'easy' difficulty).

I love shooters and have been playing PC shooters for at least a decade so I know what the game will probably bring to the table. Games such as Crysis and Far Cry are open end shooters and allow the player to think out their strategy and then execute it. A player can decide to either bypass a whole platoon or run in with all guns blazing or lure a few soldiers away and kill them using a stealth tactic.

GoW offers very little variation in gameplay since it is a duck and shoot game. The game forces the player into areas and traps them to a confined space until all opponents are eliminated. The player also must duck behind an object and essentially just pop up to shoot, move up, then duck back down for most of the duration of the game. Mass Effect is a RPG shooter so it can not relate directly. It does use a duck and cover system but the RPG elements and larger maps (more freedom) allows the game to stay interesting, not to mention the very well done storyline which was one of the best features of the game.

But hey, if you liked the game then good for you as that is what a game is for - enjoyment. Don't expect everyone to like it, though.

Meh, Crysis revolved pretty much about shooting 1 or more bad guys then cloaking ad nauseum. I will agree with you on Mass Effects story, and the fully voiced part was done quite a bit better than oblivion, but it was very repetitive. There are like 5 unique systems\missions all the others are land on a planet with a different color scheme with varying terrain that may or may not damage you outside of the vehicle and search for the items on the map. Having a larger map means nothing as the encounters that are outside are laughable. As soon as you shot any one enemy they all fire back at you (even if your at sniper range) and may hide behind cover. Enemies that melee like husks they simply run at you and take every round you through at them.

The interior levels are mostly a joke (the non unique ones) take entering a ship. I know that as soon as I enter I will be in a safe room with random boxes and it may or may not contain items then there will be a hall way with doors at each end leading to a large room with more random obstructions. There is always a ramp to the left that leads to the upper level and there may or may not be additional rooms on the far end that contain items\objectives. Aside for gaining XP\money\items landing on any other system other than the main story ones is a complete act of repetitiveness.

But Im with you and can agree to disagree.

In Halo you get to be a badass space marine saving the Earth from alien baddies. You get to fly fighters, ride in jeeps, stick enemies with grenades and watch them run around as they blow up, etc with badass cutscenes / battles. It has something resembling a plot. Nice music too.

In Gears of War you're just some ex-military guy with some ridiculously overcompensating armor who's done something to piss off someone in the government and you have to go around and fight zombies with "the Cole Train" to find a device that will send some sort of wave through the zombies' tunnels for some reason that may or may not mean anything and they never explain why the device was lost in the first place and you meet an officer you don't like and bleh bleh bleh bleh bleh

It's a bullshit plot with repetitive gameplay. The one exception was when you had to run around the warehouse dodging that monster and using that satellite beam weapon. That was somewhat difficult as you had to lure the thing under open windows and it could kill you with one hit.
