Has anyone interviewed to become a geek squad agent? If so, what questions did they ask you?

Necro thread.

From notebookreview.com forum

"I got a job at a brand new Best Buy in the Geek Squad, so I was there from the start. I'm not sure if they just couldn't find certified people in the area that would work for $11.05/hour or what, but I got hired without any certification. You really don't need to know much to get hired, though I do know quite a bit. You actually need to be better at selling and persuading. Fixing PCs is secondary, sadly enough. I left after ~6 months. During the interview process I was just asked basic interview questions. He asked me what PC I had. I told him it was custom and then the components. After that I got interviewed by the GM and he pretty much just asked about my PC experience. They both asked me if I had ever installed RAM before"

If you know all the major components of the modern computer and can navigate your way around XP and Vista honestly I can't imagine it being a difficult interview.

"Let's say you're on a service call, at a customer's house. Female. Do you know how to quickly set up a cell phone camera to take pictures of her in the bathroom?"

I'm 21 and there are no other "computer repair" places around here. I found a geek squad interview guide that the manager uses and it has all the questions. But has anyone taken the internal CIATA test?

Also I've been fired from a few jobs that i listed on my resume, but none for theft. Will that automatically make them turn me down? Can i say i quit since they cant technically find out?

I don't know how you figure they can't "technically" find out. Any company has the RIGHT to tell an inquiring employer why you left their employ. Many prefer NOT to do so out of fear of lawsuits, but if you list an employer who fired you and BB contacts them, it's entirely within the realm of possibility that the truth (or lie) will come out.

Geek Squad employees are really salespeople...so what they really want is a technical person to sell their warranties and service protection plan. They might give you a scenario where a customer comes in with a 3 year old Windows XP System that they want to upgrade and will ask how you will handle it. The main thing they are looking for is what you will recommend...so for this scenario it would be "better" for the customer to tell them that XP is outdated and that they should upgrade to vista (that's what Bestbuy wants) and that their current setup will probably not handle Vista. So you sell them a new computer, warranty, spyware + antivirus, customization, printer, all the accessories that you can think of. Key thing is to stress their service plan and give personal experience about how hard it to remove spyware and viruses and that you would always recommend anybody buying a new computer to have those programs installed. Geek Squad division makes the bulk of their revenue from their service plans and revenues, so get familiar with what they offer and lie and tell them those plans are essential and great.

Here's a question:
How are you with charging a customer for a new hard drive, hard drive installation, and OS installation when the problem has nothing to do with the hard drive?

If you answer "I'm fine with that", you'll get hired.

If you answer "I won't sell the customer on a new hard drive. I'll get the customer to buy a new PC with a 5 year extended warranty plan", then you'll be promoted to store manager.

Just got done with my interview. They are nothing like the questions i posted earlier. They also give you a mini A+ test which you have to score a 80% or higher on to pass and 30 mins to answer 50 questions. I unfortuneatly got a 68%. Theres a lot of stupid Norton questions and win 98 questions. He said I can still work for geek squad, i just cant touch the computers. I would be an assistant or something. Ill keep you guys updated if im hired.

Correct answer: Same reason I can't install it in any other OS, it's a POS.

Does Geek Squad offer part time jobs for the weekends? I'm thinking it might be nice to pick up for a little extra cash on the weekends, I'm already A+ and Net+ certified so I doubt the entry test would be a problem.
