Good price, but I bought a similar one from another site several months back and recently the power brick stopped working; the power cable itself was never very form fitting so it would disconnect a lot anyway. Keep in mind that you get what you pay for

MEI also has a similar thingy on sale for $9 (I think), but looks more barebones. it was in the local Virginia flyer.

We've had 2 or three of those things in our shop and they always end up in the garbage. They usually crap out, if they even work in the first place.

Just my $.02

This belongs in the IWANNA sticky at the top of the HD forum.

bought one a month ago for $9.99 same place. Thought it was a good deal. Turn out the darn thing didn't work with my Hitachi 250G drive an WD 80G. Try to change different settings like cable select, Slave and master... as suggest by anandtechers but still didn't work. So I throw it in the garbage after 4-5 hrs figuring playing around.

BOTTOM LINE "NOT GUARANTEE TO WORK" :|

interesting. mines been working for over a year, but recently it no longer gets the computer to recognize the drive. xp would make that sound where something is connected to the usb, then 10 secs later, it'd make that sound where you disconnected something from the usb. I think it died after i was using it 24/7 for a week or 2 when i was migrating data onto my new system and I've been looking for one to replace it.

Do they make quality ones for these? I mean external hdds use a similar architechture, but just includes a case, no?

Check this thread, for a few more $$ you get a laptop adapter.
http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=40&threadid=1725664&enterthread=y

(third post on that thread I say the following comment that some find useful)
--------------------------
As a tech, I prefer this design from Bytecc

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16812156101

it doesn't require a circuit board for 3.5"/5.25" IDE devices... rather, its double-sided one side for 2.5" laptop drives, other for regular 40-pin IDE 3.5" on up.

But, for $14 or $20(+5s/h), you can't go wrong with either.

My $.02

I have 2 of them, at least a simular model, and they have woked fine. I don't use them 24/7 but the oldest one is more than a year old and still works fine.

I got an enclosed USB-IDE adapter during the free-shipping sale in Sept. A China-made unit with no brand name on the box, just model# A-8818-35-N. Finally got around to trying it. I put a formatted IDE drive in the box, and all the partitions showed up as separate drive letters when I plugged it in. No complaints.

I would recommend getting an enclosed type adapter rather than a cable-only adapter, since it looks better and provides strain-relief on the drive connectors. Like this one. I couldn't find the model I bought onthe site anymore, and I have no info on this one.

edit: fixed screwed up link

Well, it depends on how you plan on using it.
If to have a longer term portable mass-storage device, yes I agree to get an enclosure.

But this usb-ide cable is great for us Tech's that need quick and easy use.....an enclosure has screws to lose, and you can't use a 2.5" enclosure to access a 5.25" optical or 3.5" desktop drive.

does this one come with the 2.5" adapter. I cannot find it anywhere on their product description. Look like it will only do 3.5 & 5.25 drives.
