If you want nostalgia sweetness, try to find the Obsidian X-24 Voodoo2 Dual SLI cards on one card monster. That thing was a dream come true for me for a while...and I bought it 2 or 3 years AFTER it was prime time stuff, lol.

Guy I bought mine from even had the original receipt: $695.99....but I digress, that was way back in the late 90s.

I have 2 of them sitting right in front me, collecting dust.

I found an upgrade to run a 1.3ghz celeron (tualatin) on it. that would make a nice linux box.

I'm still running my BH6 box with a celeron @ 1100 Mhz as my main linux server. That things has ran nearly 24/7 since around 2000. By far, best machine I've ever built for reliability.

Its hard for me to give good advice to the OP.
If I were to make an old Win98 system to play some classic games, I would go with a socket A Athlon Thunderbird or Athlon XP, and probably use a GeForce 4 Ti card.
Glide was OK when we all thought it would last forever, but vanilla OpenGL and Direct3D have passed it up since then.
And I dont think I own any games that are Glide or nothing, so I would settle for a non-voodoo card.

As for the game list: Final Fantasy 7 with the updated models and hi-res patch.
Magic: The Gathering (the good version by Microprose).
Dungeon Keeper 2.
And Icewind Dale 1 & 2.

Those are the only titles that have been giving me issues in Windows XP.

I remember that was the ultimate high end card at that point. That was back in the days when SLI actually worked properly.

The most interesting aspect of that card was the Mercury system. I don't know if it was ever available in retail channels, but it was some sort of compositing card that let you connect four of these X24s together (for a total of 8 Voodoo2s). Apparently it was originally built for the Air Force to run their flight simulators with AA.

And I dont think I own any games that are Glide or nothing, so I would settle for a non-voodoo card.

It's worth nothing that there were a number of games that ran best or had extra graphical effects in Glide, even when they also supported D3D or OGL.

I've seen Quake 2, Descent 3 and a number of Unreal-Engine games running in Glide and I have to say I wasnt impressed.

I've got a Celeron 2.0Ghz, 512MB RAM, Intel 845 chipset, and Voodoo 4 4500 setup at home. Mainly have that setup to run Final Fantasy VII and VIII. I'd go with Windows 2000 for much lower overhead on the system. The era of games you're playing with should be more compatible too. Heck, dual boot Win98 SE and Win2k if you got them. Play some SHOGO MADD under Win98!

If you could get ahold of them...wouldn't a couple SLI voodoo2s coupled with a geforce 4ti cover all your bases? I mean, the voodoos were add in cards meant to coexist with a primary graphics card. Then you could play the handful of glide only games you want and still leverage the power of a faster card for most stuff.

Heh, we have one of these "legacy" rigs for older games. I use the V5 5500 because so many of the older games run on the Glide engine and the old nVidia Glide wrapper never did work all that well for me. The GTS was a faster card, but we play pre Q3 Arena games on this rig, so the V5 is plenty fast enough.

I had both (I actually borrowed the GF2 from someone at school, because he owed me a favor, and it had TV out so we could watch DVD's on the also borrowed Sony VEGA) and I remember that the GF2 ran faster, although the IQ wasn't as good. Although I kept that Voodoo 5500 for 4-5 years after that, and it ran everything I threw at it. I was amazed that it scaled so well after all those years, even though it had no support for any new drivers. I still have it sitting at home.

Anyways I got a whole stack of older games kicking around (Unreal, Unreal tourey, road rash, motorcross madness... you get the idea) and want to give them a run through. I also have a K6-2 500 and Asus P5A combo or a 2.0 P4 with an Intel d845 combo, which would you run? Again... I'm partail to the K6-2 500 since it's more suited to the time era and the last of the k2's... it also sports 3 ram slot versus the 2 on the intel board. I only have 3 256 sticks of ram so I'd be able to use more ram in the older board. Not sure if it'll make much difference.

Let me know what you fellas think. Maybe I'll even do a flashy case mod to show off this beast

*** edit... By the way I was tired of all the 8800 and hd3870 nonsense. I though this would bring good memories to the boards

Voodoo 5 hands down.

The GF2 was a better card to own at the time, and would be easier to deal with today by far, but the V5 was 3DFXs swansong and is just a much more interesting video card than the GF2.

Old school dual GPU FTW!
