Ok, I Know that creative labs has a 32mb DDR Geforce 2 mx. How does that compare with the other companys SDR version? I know DDR is supposed to be twice as fast.

But my friend told me that the Creative labs DDR is only 64 bit memory, while the SDR (from other companys) are 128 bit. And told me that the 128bit SDR is STILL FASTER than the 64bit DDR, I'm not sure if this is true or not, so i come to the experts, you guys So I'm just curious, whats the lowdown on this?

Thanks!
Actaeon

(Sorry if this topic has been dicussed before, I did searches in this forum, and the general forum, and nothing came up with the DDR to the SDR preformance.)

Your friend is correct the DDR version is 64bit,anyway the SDRAM versions are 128bit & in benchmarks slightly faster then there younger DDR brother, not much in it btw.

DDR memory is slightly less efficient than SDR memory. So if you had 200 MHz DDR (400 effective) and 400 MHz SDR, the DDR memory would have 80-90% the efficiency of the DDR. The reason some are likely using DDR varients is because the chips are cheaper to buy (64-bit chips are a good deal cheaps to package than 128-bit). Also, if NVIDIA allowed 128-bit DDR on it, the MX would basically be as fast as the GTS.

just as a side notre... If your goign to overclock the cards memory the SDR boards have been easier to push past defaults.

I actually have both cards (see sig below) and can vouch that the A-Open SDR card is a little faster than the creative DDR card. But just enough to slightly notice. I am running the creative card at 314 Mhz to try to level the playing field but the A-Open with the faster processor still gets higher framerates.

The 128-bit SDR card is quicker at lower resolutions (640x480, 800x600), whereas the 64-bit DDR starts to win out at higher resolutions.

to the creative geforce2 mx card

It is possible and there are cooling kits available for about $20 plus shipping that include a heatsink, fan and even smaller heatsinks for the memory chips. The question is why? I am running mine at 314 MHz without any problems and it works fine, no heat related issues. I haven't tried overclocking the A-Open SDR card, and it does come with a heatsink installed from the factory.

Iamnotageek has a review that compares the CL Geforce2 MX DDR to a Visiontek MX SDR:

Text

<< The Visiontek card out performs the Creative card even when the cards are clocked at the same effective speed. So there is the proof the DDR RAM on this card is of no advantage over SDR RAM. >>

why do they all say 400MHz effective for 200 MHz DDR DRAM when they all know that its only 80-90% effective? so its more like 360 - 380 MHZ effective.

SDR is faster at any resolution.

SDR board has 128 bit memory bus. DDR has 64 bit memory bus. DDR board is cheaper. SDR board has slightly better performance...

buy the SDR board...
