The Chispset fan on my Visiontek Geforce 3 has quit. The system started locking up during games and after I ruled out processor heat and memory problems I noticed the fan is not running on the GF3. I have romoved it and it will not turn even with direct power to it. (from a mobo fan header) The heatsink seems to be glued on so how can I replace or repair the fan. I hate to Junk a $300 video card for what appears to be a 2 dollar fan. Thanks.

You can either a) email the company wait 2 weeks and you might get a new fan, or

B) get a blue or crystal orb and replace it. You can put the card in the freezer for a few minutes 15-20 and it should pry off with a credit card or something that is strong but want scratch.

or C) take it back to where you got it from and get a replacement, again if this is online then it may take a while and you might pay more for shipping then a new orb or something similar.

I think b is the most reasonable and best choice, you can get the hsF in a few days - a week and you can overclock that much more.

I agree, b is the best. You can also tip a can of air upside down. I would use the credit card as a protector, and a small screw driver to pry, take a razor blade and scrap it off, also take some goof off or acetone to get off the residue. I recommend any 1U rackmount proc HSF as they will provide the best cooling, and will be excellent for overclocking. Use ASII epoxy, I usually ad a dab of ASII compound to dilute it a bit so if I need to, I can take it off, and sometimes you may have to. Get a cooler to cover 110% of the GPU, this means make sure it hangs over the edge a bit.

It is very easy to remove the fan. just take out the plastic that holds the heatsink. Then just twist gently and it will come right off. You don't need to put in the freezer! Remove the residual glue with nail polish remover and put some silver artic II or III and put the new heat sink. I recommend crystal orb because blorb does not completely cover the whole GPU.

If there is glue on it, and there most likley is, he will still need to stick it in a freezer or take a can of air upside down to it. I would also still say a 1U rackbount HSF, like the alpha.

I took my VT GF3 HS off and replaced it with a CORB. It comes off easy. Just take the two pins out and it will come right off. There is a thermal pad that is no problem to remove at room temp.

Thanks for the info guys. It would not budge at room temp but 30 minutes in the frig and it poped off like a charm. Got a crystal orb on the way from www.coolerguys.com and I'll be back in business in a few days. Should I get the old Artic Silver glue or will ASII work ok ?
Again thanks for all the advise

Get the epoxy, I use and recommend the ASII epoxy. Mix it 50/50. Make sure and I can not stress this enough, make sure the GPU and the CORB is clean, by this I mean, no residue of a thermal pad, all residue cleaned off, and like I stated earlyer, use goof-off to get it off. It is like 5$ a can at the hardware atore, and will last forever. I got goof-off, opps,p and acetone, and my fav is goof off. Make sure you do not get the ASII epoxy or compound, on the PCB or on your fingures. You will be looking for trouble then. I did that and fried 2 cards:disgust:

Best of luck to you, and if ya wanted, ya could do the ram sinks too, and OC it

You dont need epoxy. The CORB will mount using the 2 stock mounting holes and the provided pins. I used ASIII on mine. I found the CORB to be very loud. I did a 7 volt mod to quiet it down.
