GeForce 4 440 Go?

I've been looking at the Compaq R3000Z. The biggest card it lets you spec it out to is the "64MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(TM) 4 440". Here's the info:

Is this GeForce a piece of junk? I've had GeForces in my desktops in the past, and while they're solid, they're not exactly peak performers.

its basically a mobile GeForce 4 MX 440, you can draw you're own conclusions from that

I hate to say it, but I would prefer Intel Xtreme Graphics rather than the 440. To my great dissapointment, I couldn't even play midtown madness 2 on my old R3000z as there was a compatibility bug that prevented the graphics from being rendered properly. It was important for me since it's one of the few games I play online with my gf. Doom 3 also barely ran at 640x480. Just a stinky graphic solution in my opinion. So I returned the R3000z and got the ZT3000 which uses the (old) ATI 9200 and even though it's an old card too, it's a world of difference better than the 440.

I'm going to write Compaq an email, asking them (1) why they don't put anything better than a gf4 or 9200 in an athlon64 machine, and (2) why the heck they don't have a compactFlash slot in their laptops with card readers.

I don't think I'm going to be buying the Compaq. It's perfect in just about every way except for the cheesy video card, which kills the deal.

The email will do you no good. Compaq i wager doesn't build there own lappys they buy from an ODM. You would have to research to find out who they use for their specific laptops. And they would be the ones to email....

ah, nuts. I really want an a64 laptop, but there aren't any that have the specs I want. The closest one is the eMachines, but I'm not impressed with the screen.

I have this laptop. The graphics are really not that bad, I get playable framerates in Unreal Tournament 2004 and Call of Duty. Vegetation's grudge is more about an incompatibility with one specific game.

His grudge may be about one game but it is a new game and there for what all new games will require so y not make sure you can play that one new game so you can play almost all new games when they come out...

Go for something with a mobile 9600, at least. Anything else is'nt worth your time.

My desktop is running the 440 mentioned above, and I get smooth graphics with 100 frames in Half-Life, handles Call of Duty fine, and used to work UT2K3 like a charm. Then again, I might just have an accepting eye, many people are a lot more picky than I am .
