Geforce 4 Ti 4600 less fps than GF2 MX!!

I just bought a PNY Geforce 4 Ti 4600. I eagerly inserted Medal of Honor to start playign at 99fps. I notice I was only playing about 40-60 fps. I checked my vid options and noticed I was in 32-bit, and I don't konw if I was in that before so that may be hte issue there. It auto-detected a card that could handle 32-bit and adjusted without telling me?
Anyway, I thought I would try counterstrike, surely I will be able to get 99 fps there... even in smoke. The fps will not go above 59 fps!!!! I was getting higher than that on my GF2 MX!! Anyone have any idea what is goign on here? This was a $320 investment and would like to see it work.

Bryan,
Do I use the NVRefresh Rate prog to fix that? Or can I just adjust it under the Display properties in Windows?

Mangled,
I have anti-aliasing set to allow programs to control the anti-aliasing... should i use something else? one of the radio buttons?

Thanks for the help

You have to use the nvrefresh program. Win2k/xp will not allow you to go above 60hz refresh rate in opengl. That means you can't get above 60fps. Just install the program. I did and it's amazing the difference between 60 and 99 fps in cstrike.

ok i did the refresh tool and it seemed to have improved my performance... now I am getting 99fps some time in small areas but out in the open I am dropping to 40-50... seems kinda odd that a $350 vid card can't support CS at 99 all the time... something else must be wrong. Also in Medal of Honor. I am getting a better fps of about 40 in 32-bit. If i go to 16-bit it drops to about 20... pretty weird huh?

in mohaa, go to the console and type r_swapInterval 0 that turns off vsync and you should get high framerates, even if you are stuck at 60hz (no benefit).

also try r_displayRefresh 75 to set your refresh rate to 75hz (be careful not to go too high for your monitor). you might have to change the game resolution to something else and back for this to take effect.

finally, i think the last one is maxfps or com_maxfps defaults to about 90, do com_maxfps 0 to set it to unlimited.

i think those are the commands.

ps, you can add "+set r_swapInterval 0 +set r_displayRefresh 75 +set com_maxfps 0" (no quotes) to the end of the shortcut that you use to start mohaa and the settings should work.

these should work for any q3-based games. hope this helps and good luck.

You are getting low fps in counter-strike because it is extremely CPU dependant. A GF2 GTS or above will give you the same fps in CS.

HerbalKiller: I'd like to welcome you to Anandtech BBS.

Chances are, its your CPU speed over everything else.

What Settings are you running MoH:AA at?

It sounds like you have vsync enabled because your framerates increased when you increased your refresh rate.

Disable vsync and your framerates will always be as high as possible, regardless of your refresh rate.

I back up BFG10K 100%.

Actaeon's also right, an Athlon1.2 is able to get decent perf out of GF4TI's, but a faster CPU will help the card to fly. Try enabling AA & Anisotropic to soak up the wasted GPU potential.

On my 2.4 northwood rig CS will run smoothly at 1280X960 8X aniso at 99 FPS ALL THE TIME. However when i throw some FSAA into the mix it drops down to 60 fps in heavy fighting, which i don't really mind cuz its still smooth but i prefer my image without FSAA cuz it looks a little soft (even with lod bias settings). Your GF4 should be bustin 99 fps with full FSAA and Aniso with no sweat at whatever res you want.

Thanks to everyone for their input. I turned off vsync and that helped alot. I now get 99 fps in CS most of the time. In fire fights I still dropped to around 70 fps. I haven't checked out MEdal of Honor yet. Before I start screwing with anisoptric and Anti-Alias, I was wonering what they do. Are they performance enhancers or do they make it look prettier, therefore lowering performance. Also, to bump Howdoesitwork, what Does Vsync do as well? THanks for the welcome Act.

What does AA, Anisotopic and vsync do?

vsync is at least (supposed to) keep your videocard refresh rate in sync with your monitors. therefore: if you run 1024x768x32 @ 60Hz your fps should be capping around the 60's unless you disable vsync. @ 85Hz it would cap around there...and so forth. unless your monitor is bad and you get tearing, it's fine to keep your settings to vsync off by default or always off. otherwise you're wasting the performance on a card like that. someone correct me if I'm wrong

Well, it looks like I may just have to go buy a new CPU to upgrade my TBird 1.2. I have also just noticed that today there are many articles out regarding the new AMD 2200. should I go ahead and buy a 2100 or wait for the 2200?

Also, any know what Anisotropic and anti-aliasing do?

What does AA, Anisotopic and vsync do?
FSAA renders the initial scene bigger and then uses various methods of pixel sampling to scale the image back down. This eliminates aliasing and edge crawling, usually at the cost of blurring the image.

Anisotropic filtering keeps the image sharper for longer distances, eliminates distortions of high-angled textures and reduces tetxure shimmering.

vsync synchronises your video card's output to your monitor's refresh rate, keeping your FPS at or below your current refresh rate. It can help reduce tearing but it also degrades performance, in some cases dropping your average FPS to half of your monitor's regresh rate.

Enabling vsync is always a good idea if you want your games to run as smooth as a movie. Here's a general rule: You need to get 110+fps average to get no slowdowns at all in games with vysnc disabled. With Quake-based games you need to set the refresh rate to 70 hertz or lower to get fluid motion (movie-like) with no stuttering and all other games it must be be set at 75 hertz or lower to get the same effect.
