That part I understand. But, explain why my GPU gets colder than its normal idle temp of 59C down to 52C. Thats a huge dip. The GPU fan does not speed up when it does this.

Why do we keep hearing this. Surely it has to be crap.

I mean, how can an update to WMP10 improve CPU usage when playing a video in Nero Showtime or nVidia nStantmedia, or nDVD or whatever? It doesn't make any sense at all.

Now, if they mean they are waiting for a new codec then that would make sense. But you know what - nVidia write the codec, not MS.

This has to a BS answer.

What ever nVidia is putting out at the end of November better be good...
Hey, did anyone have better video performance with the 70.xx drivers?

The only thing I've heard about the 70.xx drivers were that they're buggy. That came from the DL disclaimer at guru3d.

I think I have the worst "vp" of all ppl here . step into liquid 1080p totally 100% and I can estimate frame rate is about 12-15fps. gpu is in deep "hibernation" when I play the video. not the slightest gpu temp increase (using gainwards exptertool to measure temp which seems to be pretty acurate).

wow, that sucks. my system played it fairly smoothly, but with very high CPU utilization. Lots of other open processes maybe? What player r u using?

i tried :
wmp10 (ver. 10.00.00.3646)
powerdvd 5.0
bsplayer 1.02
All produce the same cpu util. always 100% for the 2 1080p videos I tried. (step into liquid and striker).
Yep it does sux. plain and simple. Doom 3 Ultra high 1600*1200 runs several times faster than a crappy video. Funny huh ? Damn M$

P.S. I know I cant compare hdwmv with doom3, dont flame me for this. It was just a joke.

(my first post )

3.3 FPS for Step into Liquid 1080
A pic is here.

I'm still using driver version 61.77, and WMP9.
I'll have to wait and see what Nvidia do about this, but if it's not fixed by the end of the month, then I'm returning my card, although I really don't want to have to do that.

YES. Something else is amiss here. with the system in my sig, I crank it out at 23-24 fps. this cannot be a 6800GT thing. something is up...

Yeah I'm in Melbourne. I don't think anything's really wrong with my system, it's just shite in general. I only recently upgraded to the 2600+ (t-bred 266FSB) from a 1800+(Palomino). Memory is 1GB generic pc2100. I'm gonna have to hold off getting a new system for a few more months though.

I can play the 720 version with the CPU at 70-80 per cent.

Harbinger, what video resolution are you using normally? If you are up in the 1600x1200 range, try 1024x768 and 1280x1024.

That may be the difference for some folks, initial resolution.

1280*1024 @ 60Hz (17'' lcd monitor , (LG-1720B))

Some further info:
Normaly cpu idle temp is 37-39C. During playback after about 3-4 mins (repeat-on on Step Into Liquid 1080p) cpu temp is 46C.
Normaly gpu idle temp is 50C. During playback (same as above) 51.5C.
Thats at 1280*1024.

Of course cpu is always 100%

I tried it out at 1280x1024. still get 22-23 fps. don't think its a resolution thing.

guys I keep posting because I think it is important to consider a non-6800GT system without hardware WMV9 acceleration. hope I'm not bothering you.

It is supposed to be 24fps and 23.x is what I get. I'm not certain what you are trying to say? The fact your 9700p is averaging 22-23fps means what exactly?

because some people like harbinger are getting 12-15fps and wondering if it is a 6800-speciifc thing.

of course you are not bothering. its good to have as many systems as possible in order to make some comparisons and even maybe come to a conclusion.

Latest word is drivers and software updates will cure our ills. Even if the pvp doesn't do most the work, as long as the CPU load is significantly lowered I'll be just as stoked

Anybody see that nVidia changed the wording of the 6800GT video processor on their website? Instead of 'On-chip video processor', it has changed to 'Adaptable video processor'. Link

However, the 6600GT retained the phrase 'On-Chip video processor'. Hmm...

I sure wonder what that means.

Didn't AT or somewhere said that 'On-Chip video processor' was just an unofficial name 'til a final official one was made?

Well i think, the name nvidia gave for the technology is 'purevideo' but i think people here are scepticle because it might indicate nvidia trying to hide something.
