However, the 6600GT retained the phrase 'On-Chip video processor'. Hmm...

Though... you click on the link below the 'On-Chip video processor' short description here and it makes full mention of being able to decode WM9 video with no specifics on the 6800 or 6600. Hmmm... does anyone else wish that Nvidia would just get off thier butts and make some sort of official announcement.

Hi i used the phone number someone left in this forum for Nvidia UK, i tried last week and its a msg saying all lines busy and leave your msg after tone, so i did and i did again today Tue 9th Nov and while out walking dog i missed call returned by some high up Nvidia rep :-(.

I have called back but obv its auto msg again, but he did say he try me again tomorrow but he is avail till 5:30pm GMT.

I have a 1 week old (after 5 month hunting and waiting) £410 Chaintech 6800 Ultra, and if it doent do as it says on box i will take legal action on Nvidia.

My story is same as most here although i can easily watch HD-WMV as pc is powerful but cpu's use is high like 55-79% and odd peak to 99%, always has been same with 1080 files.

Seems lower than on my G 4 ti but maybe as cpu is more mhz now at 2.8gig @ 450fsb Amd mobile and 1 gig ram.

What have we here!!! New official from Nvidia.com drivers... 66.93... haven't tested them yet but in the release notes look at what it mentions:

Video Enhancements
Video enhancements in Release 65 include
? Optimized motion compensation and video processing to take advantage of
the capabilities of the newest generation of NVIDIA GPUs.
? Support for Microsoft?s Certified Output Protection Protocol (COPP)
? Improved media capture interface

Maybe somebody should test these... I'm at work or I would do it myself.

Wait... that can't be right... it could have been from one of the other 66 releases but it has the note under the "RELEASE 65 ENHANCEMENTS" section which would mean that they've added or improved it since 65.xx driver release.

Those did more harm than good for me. CPU stays high 70+% average and when I go fullscreen there is serious IQ issues, including horizontal lines that distort the picture badly. This was with MP10 and MSI powerDVD 5.1.

Didn't do a thing for my system. Avg CPU usage 82%, max 96.8%. Used RivaTuner to monitor GPU temps. Technically it went up from 62 to 63 degrees C, but it obviously wasn't doing anything.
Edit BTW, this was using MP10 and it looked like it dropped a couple frames.

My average CPU usage didn't change, but I got a lot less frame drops than I had (1831 down to 491). I didn't notice any IQ distortion on my machine. Did you use Drivercleaner?

I forgot to mention previously, but here are the steps I took to get the new drivers installed:
(1) Un-install old drivers
(2) Reboot in safe mode & run Driver Cleaner & Cab Cleaner
(3) Reboot in normal mode, install drivers, reboot once more

I'll use WMP10 statistics when I get back to the desktop and see how many dropped frames I had, but overall the playback was pretty smooth.

My P4 3.2 @ 3.6 and 6800GT still hitches like mad and the GPU temperature doesn't budge from 67-68C.

I just tested the videos out again. I've had computer problems, and for some reason it doesn't seem like I can run over 133 fsb with my motherboard anymore.

Anyway, my CPU is now a 1600 mhz athlon. I've tried running the new Alexander 720p trailer. It ran completely fluidly, however, it seems the average framerate was far less than the 24 figure others have given here. Often, windows media player gave a 15 fps framerate, which was obviously false as the video was fluid.

screenshot here

More results:

Rules of Attraction, 1080p. Dropped around 70 frames.

ok , beat
this.

Things to notice :

1. CPU usage of course
2. Frames skipped
3. Frames per second
4. My sig for my rig

anyway , this is from step into liquid 1080p (2min:55sec), drivers are 66.81 (not convinced to change to the new ones yet). Winxp pro , sp2, mp10 etc etc

any ideas folks ?

the alexander trailer is strange. for me it starts about 12fps and migrates up to about 24fps by the time the trailer finishes. all the while it is fluid though with no stops. this was the 1080 version.

this is CRAZY. I noticed you had 39 processes open. I guess you've checked to make sure they weren't eating up cpu time. I only have 29 processes open usually.

I have the same exact issue.

so what's the consensus here? Did 66.93 fix the video encoder issue or not?

Haven't tried mine yet but just want to see what other people's experiences are. I'm happy with 66.81 and wouldn't want to change to 66.93 if it didn't fix the problem.

I am sure processes is not the problem. the very moment video ends cpu util drops to 1-2%. processes are stuff like msn messenger, gainward xpertool, mbmonitor, antivirus etc. System is totally clean from spyware/adaware as well.

Nope, just installed em, last night and ran the video today, I get about 11FPS on a 3.0ghz P4 with HT and a 6800 Ultra OC

I don't think 66.93 alone is supposed to fix the the video encoder issue with WMV and the 6800s?

I tracked this issue since april, when tom's hardware showed high cpu utilization on geforce 6800
when used with wmv media. http://graphics.tomshardware.c...4/geforce_6800-21.html
Nvidia said that "the driver does not support all of the features and capabilities the video processor offered
yet". but the utilization he showed for wmv9 video was a mere 36%, (he probably did not use 1080i/p resolution).

I am convinced that nvidia failed in fixing this issue in the 6800 line and i hope they come up with a new and fixed 6800 gpu's. the fact that it works on 6600 and not on 6800 proves that the 6800 has defective hardware. also 70+% cpu utilization on high end processors is ridiculus, they offloaded all the video processing to the cpu.. .

The worst part is that if it's defective you can forget about "Adaptable Programmable Video Processor" which "adapts to new video encoding formats as they are developed" if you have a 6800 card..
I believe nvidia's people are working hard to reduce cpu load on they high end chips when running wmv9
media, but i wish it was the only issue.

Anyhow, i'm holding my money and waiting for a fixed version of the GPU which would make the 6800 video acceleration work as it should, or for an AGP version of the 6600GT which makes a good compromize.
I guess it will take several months till either of this options are available..

You must have fastwrites turned off in the bios.

No, basically the PVP feature is MIA at this point.

If you haven't got one yet, I guess waiting for a fixed version is your best bet. There will always be better products available down the road, excluding the factor of cost down versions that is.
However, I think the real issue here is what nVidia plans to do with all the people who already own a 6800 based card.

Exactly. This video processor was the deciding factor in my decision to not even consider an X800. Had it not had that feature, I'd have at least considered the X800 line. I still probably would have bought a GT, but as it was, based on value and performance (when including the VP), it was just hands down the only choice.

I suspect, once the hardware defect is confirmed resolved in new 6800's, we'll all RMA our cards to the manufacturers and let them take the issue up with NVidia. Or maybe we'll get some kind of compensation to keep our defective cards.
