Ok for some reason i couldn?t find anything about this topic .... its for my friend whos ultra cheap and doesnt wanna spend anything but wants to at least have the ability to play Battlefield 2 even if its at low rez ... and also help some of those new games like Dungeon siege 2 look prettier.

His running a Athlon64 3200+ 939 core with 1GB DDR 400 on an nforce3 939 board. with a Ti4200 128Mb card.

Do u think a nice cheap 6200 128bit 128Mb card would help at all?

I'm in Australia and a 6600 agp is $180
a 6200 128bit is $100 .. the 6600 is almost double the price .. NO THANX !! this thread is asking whats the better card not what i should get.

He plays more Dungeon siege 2 .. BF2 would only be good to be an option but its not the deciding factor here.

Anyone ever seen any benchmarks that compare the 6200 vs 4200?

Ti4200 is a direct x7 card I have one. The 6200 card is direct x 9 but is to slow to make your graphics shine. You said here you wanted a card that will Battlefield 2 at low rez or help make some of the new games look prettier.

So your answer is I'm sorry neither..

Ti4200 won't work with bf2 and the 6200 will be pretty much unplayable even a minimum settings. 6600 or 9700/9800pro is what you'll need to get what your looking for. Maybe a 9600, but thats pushing it.

Now wait just a minute.
Videoclone, are you and your friend familiar with RivaTuner?
Now first of all, the 6200 is absolutely the better of the 2 cards you mentioned so go with that one putting all games and whether or not you can play them aside.

An AGP 6200 is the same exact core as a 6600/6600GT with 4 pipes disabled or 1 quad and clocked 200MHz slower.
Whether or not unlocking these pipes is successful with RivaTuner or not is a small gamble considering the very high success rate for 6200's unlocking with good results.

YMMV (your results may vary) and this WILL void your warranty. Do it at your own risk.
But out of these 2 cards you mentioned, the 6200 is the obvious choice. You may get lucky and get a 6600 if your quad unlock is successful. If not, it's still a pretty decent card for the money.

6200 128mb 64bit nv44a will cost $100
here

6200 128mb 128bit nv43 will cost $160
6200128bit

6600 vanilla 128mb 128bit will cost $160
6600

6600gt 128mb 128bit will cost $220
6600gt

ti4200 128mb 128bit will cost $220
ti4200

ati 9600 128mb 128bit will cost $100
9600

My suggestion would be the ATI 9600 or the 6600 vanilla.
The 128bit 6200's are hard to find and are expensive. The 64bit 6200 wont cut it for you.

oh sorry the prices i listed are from a local comp shop thats got 6200 128bit cards for $100 and 6600 cards for $180 its easier buying from that shop .. easier to return if something goes wrong with the card .. anyways looks like the 6200 is an upgrade from a ti4200 .. wasnt sure because i couldnt find benchmarks that compared the two.

I wouldn't bet that it is a 128bit / 128mb version of a 6200 for $100 whats the brand etc ? That is VERY cheap : - www.staticice.com.au actually it is almost impossible to get a 128bit 6200 agp for this price

Check the price of a 9600pro, please. Even stores like Best Buy have them for ~$100, and they overcharge everything. I'm SURE you can find one for as cheap, if not cheaper than a 6200.

If you can get the 128bit 6200 then go for it, else the 4200 may actually be faster. And btw ppl, the ti4200 is a dx8.1 card (and will run dungeon siege 2 fine).

haha perth like me?

Stay away from those 6200's, i got one today to tide me over while my 9800 pro is being RMA'd, and it was the 44 core not the 43, apparently almost all of them are now that are coming out. So no unlocking. Took it back and got a 9550, seems to run hl2 and farcry quite nicely at 1024 with 8xAF, so i'll be able to survive the months ahead without my  9800 pro...

A Geforce 4 4200 is faster than any geforce 6200. (can't find any direct comparisons, but I researched this extensively before upgrading my old geforce 4200).

A GF4 is about on par with a 6600.

The only problem is that GF4's can't play some games that require DX8/9 hardware. BF2 is the only one I know of at the moment.

I wouldn't get a geforce 6200 under any circumstances - they're too slow for anyone who plays a lot of 3d games.

So my vote is to get the Geforce4 But I would see if you can save up a bit more and get a radeon 9600, 9700 or 9800. (9800 is nearly double the speed of geforce 4 series cards)

Thanx Kogan ... ^_^ My Friends already got a Ti4200 ... so i guess an upgrade to a 6200 isnt a good idea and a 6600 wouldnt be a big improvement .. so looks like sticking with a Ti4200 it is .. i wonder how long he can get away with using it until its just unusable.

A 6200 is a decent upgrade from a 4200. It should be about a 30% improvement.

These are all rough "guestimates".
I have benched 6200's with turbo cache myself.
Also I am using the data from older sites that reviewed the 4200 and then adding 15% (better cpus and what not) to there scores.

his is what I think : -

The 4200 should get a 3Dmark2001 score of about 9400 on that system (which is what i use to test lower end and older video cards) at 1024x768
The 6200 should get a 3Dmark2001 score of about 12700 on that system (which is what i use to test lower end and older video cards) at 1024x768

Doom 3 on a 4200 800x600 - high quality - 22 fps
Doom 3 on a 6200 800x600 - high quality - 50 fps

HL2 on a 4200 1024x768 no aa/af - 24 fps
HL2 on a 6200 1024x768 no aa/af- 32 fps

The nvidia reference 4200 runs at 250/500 and is a directx8.1 card
The nvidia reference 6200 runs at 350/550 and is a directx9 card
