Hey guys, I was just looking at some Christmas deals online, and the Canadian retailer Future Shop has an overclocked BFG GeForce 6200 on sale AR for $120CAD(140US)

text

Is this a good card? I mean, I know it's not a 7800GT or whatever, but is it much better than my Radeon 9200?

What is its ATI equivalent?

Thanks in advance,
Stew

Edit: This is the 256MB version.

I'm not sure about prices in Canada, but for $140US dollars, you should be able to get a GeForce 6600GT, which is MUCH faster then a 6200 (even a BFG one). Also, the 256MB on a 6200 is pure unuseable fluff. If your card is using that much video memory, it's already killed the GPU's horsepower by leaps and bounds.

I'd take a 128MB 6600GT over a 256MB 6200 any day of the week.

See if you can find a 6600GT for the same price (or possibly lower).

Its equivalent should be a Radeon X300, but most of the time it is even faster than a X600XT... If you can save a little more, NCIX.com offers an eVGA 6600GT for CAD $ 178.22... That would be a much better alternative, although its price is a bit higher...

6200s suck. At the very least get a 6600GT, or a 6800GS, pretty good price/performance ratio on those.

$120 CAD is about equal to $100 USD. However, unless that 6200 can unlock to 8 pipes and overclock well, it's not a very good card for the money.

I have a Geforce 6200 - not that one though. For the price you're looking at, it is definitely not worth it. I paid $38 for mine but that was after an instant rebate, coupon, and a gift card, plus i needed to replace a Geforce 2mx so either way it was still an upgrade of sorts. Then again I don't play any recent games so it doesn't make a different to me.

I've got a lot of respect for BFG... all three of my desktop systems in my house have BFG cards in them... but I must say this...

I didn't know BFG even bothered with the GeForce 6200, and when I realized they "OC'd" the 6200 and bumped the memory up to 256MB, one has to wonder WTF were they thinking? An overclocked-high-memory 6200 is still just a fancy MS-Word rendering video card, and not much use for games beyond Solitaire.

Things that make you go Hmmmm...

Seriously dude, reconsider and look into a nice cheap GeForce 6600GT.

if your budget is around $100, that's 9800pro territory (maybe not in Cananda, though, dunno how prices stack up). The 9800pro isn't quite as good as the 6600gt, but still a very, very good video card that can play todays games at medium/low settings at *decent* resolutions. The 6200 is not a good video card if you want to do any sort of gaming. Look into picking up a 9800pro new (or used perhaps).

The 6200 is fine if it unlocks to a 6600 and overclocks decently, even better than a 9800 Pro in a lot of things. However, I'd definitely spend the extra money on a 6600GT if you could.

Stew,

The ATI equivalent is the X300. I would recommend you avoid the 6200. You would be better served by looking at the 6600 or the 6600GT. On the ATI side of things, you might want to look at the X600 series or the X700 series of cards.

a 9200 can play unreal tournament 2004 at normal settings (no aa or af) at 800x600 at 60 fps. the 6200 can do 1280x1024 at highest all settings (no aa or af). yes, it is better but not a go out and get a 6200 to replace a 9200 card.

When nVidia's 6xxx's first came out, all of them had a 128 Bit bandwidth, and the 6200 was so big of an improvement over an FX 5200 it wasn't close to being funny. It was a great deal better than a Radeon 9200, and even ran close to the Radeon 9600 Pro (this per Tom's Hardware, which has always seemed to be a pro-Intel, pro-ATi biased place). When the TC version came along, the bandwidth got cut to 64 Bit, and performance dropped to R-9200 levels.

If there are any 128 Bit 6200's still in the retail channel, they have certainly been shouldered aside on the brick and mortar stores' shelves by the cheaper version.

There is this for our messager from the Great White North, 256 MB's of video RAM on any VGA card with less than a 256 Bit bandwidth is wasting much of the RAM. It's not fast enough, the bandwidth's not wide enough, so the extra 128 MB's is just something for the marketing people to splash on the wrapper, but it means nothing. AFAIK, there is no 256 Bit nVidia card below the 6800 GT, and no 256 Bit Radeon below a 9800 XT.
