how good of a deal is this? I mean, I have been looking into vid cards lately and I had my heart set on the 9800 pro. But seeing that the 6600gt beats the 9800pro I was thinking maybe the extra money spent wont to get a better video card wont be too bad. But then I realized the the 6600gt is in the price range of a 9800xt..... ???? so many decisions... does anybody want to help me out?

so far here are the facts....

new 6600gt $205 new

9800xt $239 new

9800pro $150-$170 used

I guess the question im asking here is... what would you do?

Thanks guys.

i forgot to add, since the xfx 6600gt is the first agp to come out.... wouldnt there be other companys that are going to hop on the band wagon and make a agp 6600gt? And wouldnt the prices go lower soon as the market is saturated with 6600gt agp's?

yes the market will saturate but it will take time. Just like with anything supply and demand go into effect. Look at the 6800 release man I've never seen people jump on so manyt crazy "deals" they were just happy to be able to pay any price for one.

Personally I have a 9800pro 128mb and just played farcry,doom3 and now I'm playing hl2 with all on high settings 10x7- doom was at 800x600 and 30fps but it looked damn good and wasn't stuttering (ill take a steady 30fps no problem). For $200 I'm happy with the results. If this card can keep me happy till dx10 then all the better. If it doesn't then it will get me to a time when the 6800gt is $200 a pop and thats ok too.

another point is that you can get a 9800p in the FS forum for around $140-160. Not bad. I am not aware of 6800GT FS/T prices -- they don't seem to be as common as 9xxx series.

the 6600gt's are around $210 ish, and from the review that AT did it beats the 9800 pro hands down.

Not if you own a 2001FP and play all your games at 1600 x 1200. The extra memory speed of the 6800GT real comes into play over the 6800 OC tops 900mhz if you lucky memory OC speed.

If people keep preaching about unlocking the pipes, please provide a link for proof. Both forums I've been to had people trying the unlock and every single one got artifacts from it. The degree of how bad they were varied, but whether they were able to live with those glitches was their choice.

I thougth the bfg 0c is 370/700, and the 6600gt is 500\1000.

Well i would say if you guys are willing to pay $200 for 9800 series, then you should buy 6600GT AGP. It can beat any 9800 series out there, but it is not worth to upgrade from 9600pro you can wait until DX10 comes out. I would also like to see the proof of unlocking all the pipes for 6800OC.

I unlocked the pipes on mine (Dell oem 6800 GTO) and had artifacts at stock speeds with 61.82 drivers. However after i put on the 66.81 Forceware drivers, OC'd a little, all the artifacts were gone, and my 3dMark05 score jumped up from 3026 up to 4466 and my 3dmark03 scored jumped up to 10682, not bad eh.

i would defainly recommend buying one of these of ebay. Im conservative with my overclocking, but people are breaking 6800 ultra scores with these cards

A good vid card will do the trick to your problem.

currently I tore apart my pc and now im building a new sff.... thats why im in the market for a vid card. Also, where is everybody getting the upgrade from a 9600pro part from? I never said anything about upgrading from a 9600 pro. Either way the sff that I got has some compatibility issues with the 9600 pro so thats out of the question.

im thinking of getting the 6600 GT, Far Cry ran ok with my ti4200 but at times it would really die on me... I am thinking upgrading to that would be a good way to keep from having do a full system upgrade for awhile..

You are right that some people report artifacts though but i think almost every one I've seen with the BFG 6800 OC has been successful. That being said it seems even a stock 6800 beats the 6600GT, though not always by very much.

Yes, but the 6800 is 12 pipes, 256bit and the 6600GT is 8 pipes, 128bit.

370*12 = 4440
500*8 = 4000

700 * 256 = 179200
1000 * 128 = 128000

So, the 6800 is usually faster core (can't always use all pipes) and always faster memory bandwidth.

Thanks, I'm all for softmodding, from the initial reports it sounded as if it wasn't going to work. Nice to know that it has been working for a lot of people. So far in the poll one, all the BFG's have worked, looks like that might be my new card, unless some super black friday sale pops up.
