This is really pissing me off, i recently built my new PC and my Asus v9999 GeForce 6800 Ultra Deluxe freezes most time in 3dmark03 and 3dmark05 during some of the more intense tests, sometimes same spots, also doom 3 freezes sometimes when running high settings, and also Counter-Strike freezes in menus when running 1280 by 1024 res sometimes.

my pc specs:

Asus A8V Deluxe Wi-Fi
Asus v9999 Geforce 6800 ultra deluxe
Athlon 64 3500+
2x512 OCZ PC3700 EB DC
520Watt OCZ Powerstream Power supply

Also during Warhammer: Dawn of War it froze and came up with the error titled 'Windows - Display Driver Stopped Responding" 'The nv4_disp display driver has stopped working normally. Save your work and reboot your system to restore full display functionality. The next time you reboot your machine a dialog will be displayed giving you a chance to upload data about this failure to microsoft.

Also during 3dmark05 when it froze one time came up with the error "IDirect3D9::CheckDeviceFormat failed: Invalid Call (D3DERR_INVALIDCALL)"

Ive tried 61.77, 61.76,66.72,60.85,66.81. Ive also tried bios updates, also tried fresh install of XP on a brand new hdd, done all updates and latest directx9.0c.

I have had this same problem with my PNY 6800. Thanks for the tip, I'll try it when I get home.

I believe the new version of Rivatuner fixes 6800 freezing.

If your BIOS version on the card ends in "14" you need to get the latest reference version from nVidia (it ends with "15").

This is a stupid question, but what does "fast writes" do?
AGP -> CPU (and vice versa) communication without touching the main system RAM.

ok i tried disabling fast writes but i still get the freezes. also this blue stop error screen appeared during 3dmark03 ::

A problem has been detected and windows has been shutdown to prevent damage to your computer.

Tho problem seems to be caused by the following file: nv4_disp

If this is the first time youve seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. if this screen appears again, follow these steps:

The device driver got stuck in an infinite loop. This usually indicates problem with the device itself or with the device driver programming the hardware incorrectly.

Please check with your hardware device vendor for any driver updates.

I would try running driver cleaner and reinstalling your display drivers. What card did you have before this?

I've been battling my 6800 Ultra for months now, and to no avail. If I was actually able to fix any of my problems with my 6800's, I'd be more than happy to help. But so far nothing I've tried has helped.

Word to all giving advice, I don't recommend pushing one solution for it. The Fast Writes issue may work for a lot of people, but more often than not the people that it doesn't help get swept under the rug, and no one wants to help them. My own thread on this problem has gotten a lot of good advice so far, so please spread the love here too

But AssyrianKing, you seem to be in the same boat as me in terms of trying everything you've heard and having none of it help.

I was on the phone with PNY Tech, and one of them asked me to take out one stick of RAM. I don't know what it did or how it was supposed to work, but one of my problems disappeared (others were still there, but once again, try it with one stick of RAM if you're at wits end. Desperation fosters funny ideas )

Also I would recommend using RivaTuner (google it) and make sure Fast Writes are disabled, sometimes the card/driver likes to enable them despite your settings in the BIOS. It may not help but it never hurts, you shouldn't have them on anyway.

Also if you have the option, turn off Side-band Addressing, and any BIOS/Video BIOS Shadowing/Caching.

If you've upgraded your Motherboard BIOS, take a look at the Video Card's BIOS version, there are new ones available, but use it as a last resort if nothing else wants to work, because if you mess it up you may paperweight-ify your Video Card

Keep us all in touch, maybe you'll luck out and fix yours

ive never had a card prior to this 1 in this machine, its a new built pc. ive used that detonator R.I.P tool and reinstalled new drivers to no avail.

bigwayne ive read your thread and i get almost all the same problems as you, i also had the same blurry and jittery desktop screen like your link posted it scared the hell outa me, which leads me to beleive that this is an issue with underdeveloped software for these new cards or a hardware issue that can only be fixed with a new revision from the manufacturers, which if was the case would be a HUGE disaster! and i think it is that case . I am extremely unhappy as before building my new pc i spent weeks n weeks researching and looking at reviews from multiple popular websites which all had very positive outcomes for the hardware i purchased including my 6800 ultra, i was happy to spend my money on this expensive card but after these major issues i am totally pissed angry and want my money back! which i highly doubt!.

we shouldnt have to deal with poor quality hardware that is the manufacturers fault! and not user error. ofcourse they'd never admit to this, even if they new they were wrong, in which case they are.

I've got new screens from my recent (hour ago) clean out of drivers, and installed 61.76 drivers!

As soon as my bro is through using the camera I might post them if my thread isn't dead yet, but these new ones include horizontal black stripes that alternate in position every half inch, with some screen flashing every 5 or 6 seconds. Quite interesting since it seemingly halted my computer at startup. I rebooted and it worked fine, but its never happened to me before. But thats another horror story to tell the kiddies around a campfire.

Personally, I have to have hope in the future. If its not something us few are missing, then its something that goes far beyond just a hardware revision, I fear. Either way, if you're that unhappy about it, I'd RMA the card, see if the one you get back is better. If not I wouldn't mess around with another RMA, but demand your money back.

*eyes up an X800, it looks sexier after my 6800 broke up with me*

my GPU temps are:

GPU Core temp: idle> 60 celcius, load> 80 clecius

reported by temperature settings in display, advanced settings. these temps have been same for the different drivers ive used.

are these normal? ive heard these cards do reach round 80celcius.

Are you running two separate power lines to the card with nothing else on the cables?

Try using BFG's setup instructions for dual power plug cards here. Click "Quick Install Guide" right at the top of the middle column and it'll load a PDF in a new window.

yes my graphics card is not running a Y cable splitter. It has 2 seperate shielded power cables to it. also my PSU has 2 individual 12v rails.

A lot of people are having these problems Assyrian, including me. I've been building rigs for over 8 years, and not one single piece of hardware has given me more problems than the 6800 GT. Unfortunately the only thing I see us people having problems can do is RMA the card or wait for NVidia to get off their collective asses and do something about it.
