My wife's PC has a GeForce 760 and drives two displays: Her 1080p monitor (which has DP and HDMI) primarily and a 1080p TV screen (duplicate screen setup, TV on opposite wall to monitor).

She's also got her work laptop (which is brand new) that she connects to the monitor (as a second screen / extended desktop), currently via HDMI.

The GeForce 760 has 2x DVI, 1x HDMI and 1x DP.

I started off with a DVI to HDMI adapter which worked fine except it stuck out the back of the computer too much and caused problems behind her desk, also I needed the monitor's HDMI input for the laptop. I bought a DP to DP cable, but the problem with that is that the graphics card evidently thinks DVI is better than HDMI which is better than DP, so when I was using the DVI -> HDMI adapter, the PC was happy to serve up the initial BIOS and OS loading screens on the monitor, but with the monitor connected via DP (as it is currently), the PC defaults to using the TV screen to show the BIOS and OS booting screen which is not ideal.

My logic at this point is either to put up with that suboptimal arrangement or to get a DVI to DP cable. Are there any alternatives I might consider? The only alternative I can think of is maybe USB-C from the laptop to DP on the monitor, then maybe get a DVI to HDMI cable which more or less mirrors the configuration I tried first without the bulky extra adapter.

There's no reason to change the graphics card nor do I have one spare; she has had little use for the 760 in her PC already (I put it in there so I could occasionally use her computer to rip DVDs with NVENC but these days I do it in software with my new-ish AMD7000 PC).

DVI to DP will not work with the DVI being on the PC side.

Only if you use the DP end on the PC and run the DVI to a monitor.
