Am i right in thinking that the best graphics card that is compatible with the standard Dell Dimension 4500 mobo is the Geforce 7600?

Im currently upgrading the pc from bog standard and need some tips. Thanks.

Thanks for telling me, i forgot it was AGP... What is the 7600GS AGP card like then?
Im looking to play games on the machine when it is finished, so i need a card that can handle such things.

AFAIK, nvidia didn't make a 7xxx AGP card. Look toward ATI's cards for AGP.

Actually they did. (Note the link in my post above to a 7600GS AGP.)

jumplead, what games are you looking to play? I could technically play Crysis on my 7600GS, but that was with everything set to low and the resolution at 800x600. If you're talking about Source games like Counter-Strike and TF2, then the 7600GS ought to be enough. Otherwise as angry hampster said you'll probably find more powerful AGP options on the ATI side, but I don't know much about the specifics.

Gah! I missed that. Anyway, ATI's 3850 AGP card should be coming out soon from Powercolor. It was announced a couple of months ago but I haven't seen or heard of any actual product.

Ill be looking to play Source games (TF2, HL2 Gmod etc), but would also like to play other games such as Call of Duty and Battlefield. If i could get a good enough card, i would hope to play Far cry or crysis etc.

There's also a 7900gs AGP card which is probably the best out now (and you could probably find on the forums for around $100). If powercolor really does come out with a 3850 AGP card, then that would be the greatest thing since sliced bread for AGP people.

With a 2 ghz P4 just about any modern game is going to be a slideshow at times. You can make it a pretty, soft glowy high res slideshow with a modern graphics cards but anything released in 2006+ is going to target a 2.4+ ghz dual core for smooth gameplay. Read: you've got 1/3 the required CPU capacity, a new GPU will be a great help, but not a cure all.

All your target games use plenty of CPU when you're talking multiplayer.

Save the money and continue suffering until you can justify a complete system upgrade. You'll need about $600US for a capable modern gaming rig:

E2160 + (DS3L or P35-E or Neo2FR) + fan + 2G ram = $200-210
3850 or equivalent: $140-$180
PSU, SATA HD, case, optical drive = $200

Since you have an OEM OS license you'll need to throw another $55 for a vista home or around $100 for XP. Linux is possible for the games you mention but would require an Nvidia card.

nVIDIA went all the way to the 7950GT 256MB for AGP.
