I have a computer I am putting together for video editing. I've got a chance to ger a GeForce 7950GT at 512MB for the same price as a GeForce 8600GT at 256MB. The current video software uses Windows XP not Vista. I'm wondering if direct 10 is worth going with a less powerful card for now?

You are better off with the 7950 either way. With or without DX10, it blows away the 8600 in gaming.

by the way, where are you getting a 512MB 7950 that cheap?

I made a mistake about the 512MB. It is a 256MB for the same price of the 8600. I have access to a store that is trying to sell off some BFG 7950's. The 512MB version are about $100 more than the 256 MB cards. The store is trying to make space for newer cards coming out.

Not even think about 8600GT. 7950GT is much more better choice.

8600GTS has roughly the same performance as the 7950GT, but with only 256MB of VRAM.

8600GT is a very low end card.

8600 GTS has the same performance with 7900GS, not 7950GT

In titles like oblivion and shader heavy apps, its quite faster than a 7900GS. Even more so than the 7950GT.

Id say go with the 7950GT in this case though. (same price for more consistent high performance isnt that bad)

Yeah, but talking about medium-levels playing 7950GT is better.

I agree. I've got 2 BFG 512MB GeForce 7950GTs in SLI mode and they rock. Just make sure you spend the extra dough for the 512MB version as 512MB of VRAM is the sweet spot for the next while.

If you can get a 7950gt for the price of a 8600gt go for it - and buy me one

The only qualifier I have is the 7xxx series was caught up in the HDCP compliance bruhaha and if that is important to you please verify. Most likely this is not a problem with the 8600gt but always check it out!

You didn't specify your software but regardless your best bet is to build as *HD proof* as you can for the future . . .

well if its for video editing only... i'd probably just get an 8600gt. a 7950gt still costs like $170 and a 8600gt on newegg anyway is like $100.

not to mention the 8600gt will use less power, and has better video decode hardware.

The 8600GTS is about the same as a 7900GS. I actually have 2x 7950GT in SLI.

Here's a linky to 3DGuru.com. It shows that a SINGLE 7950GT outperforms an 8600GTS SLI setup in some situations and the 8600GTS barely outperforms a 7900GS in most situations, if not exactly the same.

I think 7950gt will be faster on most of the graphics stuff nowadays and maybe 8600gts will beat it in the future for dx10 games but even that is questionable now. besides video editing do not depend on dx10 much at all so if you doing that don't even consider dx10.

7950GT 256mb is the best value for GF7 on the market. No need for DX10 and XP is the OS - your choice is clear. If you have the extra $100 you go for 8800 GTS 320mb.

You will enjoy it. =)

Edit: People, seriously, stop suggesting to 'just get the 8600GT'. It's a failure. 7600GT beat it into the ground and comes back with each review to violate the grave. Even 8600 GTS is suspecious considering 7900gs and 7950gt are within the price range.

Between a 7950gt and an 8600gt, the 7950 is the easy choice if they are the same price...

It may take a little bit more thinking if you were comparing the 7950gt to the 8600gts and were paying current market prices.

I am quite happy with my own 8600gts.

8800gts 320mb is at the same entry price as the 512mb 7950gt now. At least at newegg (about $259).

8600 GTS has barely the same performance with 7900GS in shader heavy scenarios, not 7950GT

Fixed. . .
