gibster lots of people are going to aftermarket on the cooler.
Seems that it is marginal and if you want less noise and more cooling you will have to go aftermarket.

Yeah, I saw some people getting dramatically lower temps with better coolers, no surprises there. I would hate to have to go to 2 slot cooling solution though, I like my 1 slot card

I read a few people had good luck just removing the cooler cleaning the thermal goop and reinstalling. I guess at least some cards came with a metric shit ton of thermal paste all over them which hindered cooling. They had to be careful to save the memory pads though because the cooler isn't flush to those chips and needs them for heat transfer.

Ewiz is pretty good in my experience. I'd bought my first order from them back when they were called knowledgewave or something like that, which was probably like 5 years ago now. I think I had a bad item in that and they refunded or replaced it without incident. They changed to ewiz a little while later. I've been happy with all the orders I've played with them since. They're slower then the egg but nothing terrible, they're just a smaller company I think. Their website has improved a lot.

On the cooling issue, my experience thus far (I got the BFG 8800GT OC from BB):

Stock HSF, mine has been idling around 58C, with the fan at 29% (default). When I game, I've been manually turning the fan up to 85%, using Ntune, and have been around only 65C, but I have also exited a game, immediately checked and seen it in the upper 50's. Not bad at all.

on overclocking: my BFG OC came stock at 625/1800, and I've ran it in Crysis at 650/1900 for over an hour without a problem.

I'm hoping that the two new cards from ATI will take some of the pressure off of the 8800 GT. If ATI has the volume up and price down, then we should see the 8800 GT start coming down soon. It looks like ATI has a nice card in the 3870, but I still want the 8800GT.
