Pretty decent for those nVidia fans who don't feel like a 9600XT. Do note that 5900's are only a tad more now, and 9800 Pro's are just a little more than a 5900.

you should pop for a 5900nu and overclock it to 5950 status. the 5900's prices fluctuate like mad though

Yeah, but it's risky. Half the time the card is ruined. Then you get people RMAing them back to wherever they scored them from, and some places will just resell the returned cards without actually checking to see if they work.

Anyway, seems pretty decent. But add the price, where you can buy it and probably "YMMV" to the thread topic, 'kay?

Overclocking will kill half the cards...nope. Flashing maybe, but overclocking hardly. ATI and NVidia are starting to include overclocking utilities with their drivers even.

The OverDrive feature that the new ATI cards doesn't overclock that much.

True that, but the point is that it is overclocking.

Overclocking doesn't ruin cards "half the time."
Nice made up statistic.

Volt modding (a much riskier procedure) doesn't ruin half the cards, even counting when less experienced people attempt it and kill their cards. Sure some people, at some time have killed a video card by just overclocking it, but that's a lot less common than people ruining their cards with a volt mod or a heatsink replacement (or just an AS application gone wrong).

Seriously, I really don't quite understands why nVidia product's pricing is rather contradicting, see, if u are buying this Fx5700ultra at $150 or $170, might as well chip in a little say $20 more to get the Fx5900 which can easily achieve as a Ultra at slightly or even same costs if you have noticed the previous offers available on newegg or etc. for such Fx5900 cards.

The 5900nu is discontinued. Pricing weirdness like that isn't too uncommon. But I agree that someone is better off buying a 5900nu for $20-$30 more. It's well worth it.

I would not buy 5700Ultra since the 5900 non-ultras are priced so cheap right now. With the 5900, you get the twice the memory bus and twice the pipelines. I just picked up a BFG 5900 for $175 with Call of Duty bundled.

All this discussion about overclocking. It is practically approved by Nvidia. They have the Coolbits overclocking utility built into their drivers when you enable it with one small registry change. It allows me to clock my 5900 at 450 core and 1000 memory. Perfectly stable. No need to try and flash the bios. Any 5900 whether is is a 5900SE, 5900XT or 5900 will smoke the 5700 Ultra in most situations. Just my 2c.

This is about the best price you'll find for the 5700 ultra, but I would also recommend you pay the extra $20 and get the 5900.

I have the feeling that stocks of the 5900 are about to evaporate and the 5700 ultras will be the only mid range card nvidia offers in a short period of time. The 5700 ultra is a good card, i would just grab a 5900 before they are so rare that the price shoots up a bit.

just for clarification, the 5900 isn't a midranged card, it's a high-end card. just because it's older and the price has dropped doesn't shift it into the midranged section, if that's what you meant by "... will be the only mid range card....".

but i agree with you on snatching up a 5900. if i remember correctly the prices on those things were actually down to around $155 but then shot back up to high $180's. BFG is the cheapest brand for the 5900 if i'm not mistaken, but i think the sellers have recognized the popularity of the card and have stop the price drops on it.
