i don't know what the engineers at nvidia have been smoking for the past year, but it must be some really powerful stuff.

If that is true, then it is part of the reason they're going to go SO far in the tank with that fiasco this product cycle. Sheesh, what a waste.

Would have been nice if the Inquirer had shown the data this investigation has evidently compiled.

As is we're left with no verifiable evidence this is true, no testing of any GF FX product that can definitively prove this.
They give precious little besides a few comments from someone they claim is an nVidia Technical Marketing Manager.... whom this person is we have no idea, and nVidia's clearly not changed their official stance.

Frankly, I'd like to see something to back up their claims.

Dave Baumann at Beyond3D has been espousing a similar theory over the past 10days, and at least he's brought forth some degree of data to back up his claims, and sought others that can further verify the accuracy pof his theory.

Right now it certainly sounds possible that the GF FX has some sort of hybrid 8pixel pipe architecture that is capable of outputting 8 pixel/ clock is certain cases. The evidence for 2 fixed TMU/pixel pipeline still seems to be lacking however.
It seems like X-updates and Stencil Updates can be output with 8pixel/clock but rendering to the framebuffer is may only be 4pixel/clock.

More evidence is definitely needed before anyone can claim to make any definitive statement however.

Here are the FX specs:
GeForce FX Specs from: http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.html?i=1749&p=2

0.13-micron GPU
125 million transistors
8 pixel rendering pipelines, 1 texture unit per pipeline, can do 16 textures per pass
1 massively parallel vertex rendering engine
4 x 32-bit "DDR2" memory controllers running at ~500MHz DDR
Up to 48GB/s of memory bandwidth using compression
AGP 8X support
Full DX9 Pixel & Vertex Shader support

I think that the Inquirer is wrong on this one!

No Kidding!

Seems like who ever was at 3DFX and sunk that ship is now a Nvidia sinking that ship and perhaps been on the ATI payroll the whole time.

Nothing against nVidia, I have now had 3 cards based on their chipsets...but I hope the FX tanks! I don't want a card that takes up two slots and sounds like an F14 on take off. I had a Radeon between my GeForce256 and GeForce3 200Ti and was satisfied with it. If nVidia does not redeem itself in time I'll be going back to ATI to play DX9 titles when they come around.

I dont think Nvidia is in serious danger yet. Dont forget that they still hold considerable market share and just beacause ATI has pushed them out of the high end doesnt mean they are losing money. I dont see how Nvidia can hold majority share when ATI keeps on rolling out products. The next generation ATI cards look very aggressive. The Radeon 9600 is a .13 micron part will offer Radeon 9500 pro performance and be priced near 125$! That card has the potential for making Nvidia lose its marbles since it targets the main stream market.
