I have the cash for a FX but just dont feel comfortable spending it on a product overhyped and out performed by a 6 month old card. Im building a P4 3.06 and I'm still unsure what graphics card to put in it. I stuck with either a mid-range Nvidia or high end ATI 9800 or 9700 PRo. It would be a shame to build an awesome system and be lacking in the graphics arena. Do I take my chances with ATI driver compatiability and stability issues or just wait it out until the NV35 drops in the fall.

1ManArmy,
yeah its not easy to switch. I've been with Nvidia since Riva128.
But times change, ATI is the way to go these days.

Recalling Nvidia vs 3dfx wars ppl who stuck with 3dfx look rather silly now.

EDIT Looking at your Led Zeppelin sig
you can guess where my sig is from .

To quote Maximum pc, "One card is fast and loud, the other is faster and not loud. The choice is simple."

I've decided on the Hercules 9800 Pro to replace my Ti4600. I like the copper cooling solution and the blue pcb. Main reasons to by a video card isn't it?...lol.
Besides, if I don't like the performance, I'll sell it and get a NV35 when it comes out. $400.00 for a video card is about right. The Voodoo5 5500 was $399.00 when it came out. The GF2 Ultra was $500.00 when it came out. GF3 was $379.00. GF4 Ti4600 was $399.00. 9700 Pro $399.00. Back in the day, the hot setup was two Voodoo2's in sli would set you back a cool $600.00! You want bleeding edge performance, it's gonna cost ya.

wait a minute, you said "just dont feel comfortable spending it on a product overhyped and out performed" and then you said "Im building a P4 3.06." does anyone else here sense the irony?

Whillamette P4 certainly were overhyped and outperformed... Northwood = redemption. P4 3GHz overhyped? When and where? Because I certainly dont see how it is outperformed. Certainly not consistently by anything from AMD, and some people do not consider overclocking as an option at all. Besides he didn't say anything about a budget, on the contrary he seems to have a lot of dough to shovel into a new rig, and right now the P4 3.0Ghz is the fastest PC cpu that money can buy. Athlon XP 2800+ and 3000+ fall short as they are far from dominating in a decent number of benchmarks. Performance? Hype? If anything the Athlon 3000+ is overhyped and doesn't dish out the performance (we aren't considering overclocking in this case).
