Great, now that Head1985 was proven wrong, can we get back to the actual topic from the OP?

I guess you must've missed the launch party of 1070, that & the fact that (I bet) 99% of sales are above 379$ which is the base price IMO, not that FE ponzi scheme!

1070 isn't midrange though. Neither was the 970. They're enthusiast cards. Midrange tops out at around $250.

Ah, the launch price of the fully enabled GF114. What great days for consumers.

Too bad it's not 2011 anymore. GK104 = $500, GM204 = $550, GP104 = $700.

Yeah, GTX 1060 launching tomorrow? Nah. I mean, it'd be nice to get competition, but I reaaaaaaaaaaally doubt it.

Could be a paper launch tomorrow with availability trickling out as fast as they can make it. Makes a lot of business sense to do so on nVidias part

So double launch tomorrow with lots of stock for both the 480 & 1060 then?

I would doubt lots of stock for the 1060, if it even paper launches. There's been next to no rumors / sneak shots of it until just days ago, where we were seeing 1080 / 1070 stuff a lot farther in advance than 3 days.

It would be the best kept secret launch in GPU history if they launched the 1060 tomorrow with lots of availability.

It would be a really odd Release. It would be even more odd that there would be no leaks or rumours about it.

OTOH, Nvidia making the announcement of it tomorrow makes sense, but not an actual Release.

I do not expect the 1060 in stock, just having a bit of fun at the counter marketing nvidia is using to try and slow down the 480 train before it arrives at station tomorrow

I do fully expect some kind of announcement about the 1060 from nvidia tomorrow. Even if that apparently does not make their AIBs happy at all since their sales channels are still chock full of older cards. With an announcement it makes it much harder for them to liquidate inventory at higher prices. Looking like we seeing a knee jerk reaction from nvidia.

You don't really think this was a "leak", do you? One day before Polaris release day? It was obviously an intentional marketing move by Nvidia.

You do know there have been leaks for about a month or so now, right? And for the second time in this thread, not sure why you're asking me.

If that's a marketing move, it's a poor one. I wouldn't wait for this card unless some credible leaks showing GM204-like performance popped up.

when the heck did $400 graphics cards become midrange? i feel like i'm taking crazy pills

i'm not going to spend all morning looking at this, but what's the price of a product that's not available to purchase?

970 was $330 on release. 390 was similar.

That price was about half way, because the high-end is as you saw, $650 and $1000 for enthusiast class.

A long time ago, mid-range was ~$199. Because enthusiast was ~$650 and high-end was ~$400. But the price has steadily creep up overtime.

Ultimately, the way to judge whether a GPU is mid-range, or high-end etc is to compare its die size to others within that same generation.

It becomes very simple: You have the biggest chip produced for the gen/node, 550-600mm2, that's top dog, then you have a chip ~half that in size. That's the mid-range one.

ie.

GM200 => High-end
GM204 => Mid-range
GM206 => Mainstream
GM207 => Entry

But since chip class do not correlate with price segments like in the past (it's jacked up obviously), it's just more accurate to compare chip size/design/power etc.

I don't like this trend of creeping up the price tiers, because if it keeps going on, NV's going to release 1080Ti at $1449 and it's GG for gamers.

It was a rhetorical question; I wasn't asking you specifically. And regardless of what may have been leaked before, the timing of this, combined with other factors such as the high quality of the photo, makes it clear this is just marketing.

If that's a marketing move, it's a poor one. I wouldn't wait for this card unless some credible leaks showing GM204-like performance popped up.

GM204-like performance is the most reasonable expectation, IMO. And besides, what other choice does Nvidia really have? They don't want to cede the whole sub-$400 market to AMD. Better to give the Nvidia-leaning buyers an excuse to wait a little bit longer.
