dude the competition is strong. GTX 1060 is far from the mid-range card. ref Rx 480 (which is heavily throttling and rarely hits 1266 mhz) is 5-10% slower in DX11. But Rx 480 rocks in DX12/Vulkan.

Custom Rx 480 like strix/nitro against custom gtx 1060 should be very close. DX12/Vulkan is the future. If you want to buy for the present and future custom Rx 480 is the card to get.
The strix should be priced similar to the 1060 too. Around $290 because of all the customizations.

1060 slightly beats 480 in DX11.
480 beats 1060 in DX12 by a much larger margin than it loses in DX11.

If you are going to play DX12 games, get the 480 for less. If you are going to play DX11 games and get a new card in about a year, get the 1060.

We shall certainly see as things move forward. Guru3d has 480 win in 3/4 DX 12 games, for example.

Either way, reference cards seem odd to buy here from either brand imo. The 480 blower isn't the best, and the 1060 FE is overpriced (literally 25% premium over the 480 8gb). Custom vs custom will determine the battle, as well as custom 480 4GB and 470 which will still be very viable options at 1080p for likely much less money.

I'm curious about how price for these plays out over the next couple of days and weeks....already seeing markups of +25% and much, much greater vs the MSRP which is already a disappointing +20% over 480 does not bode well.

performance-wise: +7% over 480 in DX11 now and losing forever with DX12 (almost certainly losing in all benchmarks 6 months from now) does not bode well, especially with that price difference.

This seems like the card to recommend if it is important to you to boast a 5-8% performance premium for about 1 or 3 months of ownership over a card that is roughly 30-40% cheaper.

Good, I hope my brother enjoys the RX 480 for a long time

Its sold out now but there was a Gigabyte 1060 available on Newegg for 250 so it seems like some AIBs will hit reference pricing.

It seems like you can make a valid case for either the RX480 or GTX 1060 depending on the exact games you play, how long you plan to keep the card for and the specific AIB deals you can find at the moment you buy. No clear winner.

It seems to be status quo in terms of power efficiency. The GTX 960 was 45% more perf/watt than the R9 380, and GTX 1060 vs RX 480 looks to be around the same difference in perf/watt.

Odd that the MSI card is listed for $300 with a $10 MIR right off the bat, bringing it to the stated MSRP of $290...

Dear Sapphire. Drop that Nitro now.

OTOH, The 1060 STRIX looks pretty awesome, like a stealth bomber.

Much like the clock rate discrepancies between reviewer and consumer cards, MSI is also quoting different MSRP's now between reviewers and consumers?

Seems like more reason to be wary of MSI GPUs. They often draw more power too.

I have an ASUS 1060 in my cart on Newegg. ALmost pulled the trigger, but had second thoughts. Oh well. I'll give it a few weeks. It's funny, because I really don't need it and barely have time to play any games but I really want the card. Damn computer hardware fetishes.

The non-gaming power consumption of the 1060 should translate to dead silent operation on a card that idles the fans. Looking at the EVGA page for the card, they don't explicitly state that the fans shut down on the card as they do for the 960 so I guess that isn't resolved yet. I'll have to see if a 480 vendor steps up with a silent card as well. Since I spend a lot more time non-gaming than gaming, a low power, silent card that is capable of ramping up for gaming is the holy grail for me.

Weird. The 1060 has higher minimums than the 480 at 1440p than at 1080p. Normally the higher clock speeds benefit lower resolution.

But good Lord... look at the 480's averages and maximums... just CRUSHING the 1060.

I'll assume Nvidia's driver team has some work to do here.

If you see the graph, its only one instance at that low minimum. The rest of the benchmark run is on par at ~40fps
