Many of our colleagues were writing about the shortage of Nvidia Geforce GTX 1080 and 1070 cards and they got things mostly right. Our multiple sources close to AIB partners told us that the 1080 is the bestselling high-end card in the history of GPU.

Everyone we talked to, outside of Nvidia of course, has confirmed that Geforce GTX 1080 launch was the biggest volume high end card launch, that was ever deceived by Nvidia at launch date. This got confirmed by both AIB and retail / etail sources and guess what, it all sold out in minutes. The numbers were much bigger than with Geforce GTX 980 or Ti launch, but it still sold within minutes.

If you read the Geforce GTX 1080 reviews, you will see that this is the largest performance delta in years, and that the card eats last year’s flagship Geforce GTX 980 Ti for breakfast. Following launch cards that got sold in minutes, Nvidia is shipping limited volume of cards on a daily basis but it seems that etail and retail guys are fulfilling the pre-orders with these cards.

" biggest volume high end card launch, that was ever deceived by Nvidia at launch date."

Pretty much...

I find that hard to believe considering the limited availability. I thought it would have been the 8800GTX actually.

If I remember correctly, I read that Gibbo on OCUK said the same thing, he then went on to say that Pre-Orders are included in those figures. And they're still working on fulfilling those pre-orders.

Yeah, he said they had ~5000 preorders, but had only shipped ~1000.

nVidia using pre-orders as "sales" is not new.

But in this case, for judging demand vs supply, they are - they'll definitely get fulfilled before anything goes on the shelves.

Vendors have no incentive to lie. The card is a smashing success. They're selling plenty and they can't make them fast enough. Just watch the steam survey results over the next few months.

Why ever not? It doesn't even automatically imply that NV will get bigger sales over time, it just takes the group of people who early adopt a top end GFX card to have got more impatient.

It has a very similar market proposition to the 980, so a priori you'd expect it to sell at roughly 980 levels, + whatever %age they gain from not having any high end competition this time round.

I wonder what the best selling ~300mm2 die card actually is though. 8800 GT @ ~324mm2?

I really don't think that a gaming card market that does this is a gaming card market that includes me. This has been an outright bad launch, but whatever, people put up the money for it.

Take 5 seconds to look through his post history to see what side he sits on.

In either case I certainly hope the after market vendors can keep up enough to keep the prices down initially.

And that's why we have sources and quotes directly from people! As well as even some hard numbers!

Deceived into click bait ads is right !

Still <5% (if even 2%) of the market. Profit margins are great though, which makes me happy as a NVDA shareholder. It's exactly what I want JHH to be doing. Milking the consumer for all they are worth.

I'm willing to bet that Fudzilla probably read the exact same thing on OCUK, and then decided to write up an article about. This is probably their only source.

Also for the sake of accuracy Gibbo didn't actually say that the 1080 was the best selling high end card in history, he said that it sold better than even the 970. This may or may not make it the best selling card in history.

What a well written and robustly sourced article, I cannot be skeptical of it's conclusions.

Really don't think there's much reason left to be skeptical, there's absolutely no reason to believe 1080 sales at least aren't good and a decent amount ofg evidence that they are. Now I don't understand why they're so good given the pricing is extreme even by NV standards, but it's not the first time everyone - including NV - have been surprised at how well a very high priced card sells.

Say what?

That actually appears correct using techpowerup's performance summary numbers. 980 -> 980 ti, 780 ti -> 980 and 390x->fury x all were smaller jumps. You can argue overclocking and such but it's not unfounded to say.
