Yeah i got what i deserved and im quite happy with it now that i understand how things are.
After using this card for two months, i can say that while yes, the noise levels of the 80-100% speeds are bad, the cooling efficiency is so good that no game i played managed to push the fan beyond 71% (on auto fan control).
Temperatures were comparable with the 8800gtx but the fan speed % needed by the 480 is much lower.
It is possible that the fan speeds of 80% and up will never be needed unless for rare extreme situations.
So yeah on stress tests or on bad adjustments the 480 would be noisy, but in real life applications and with the right settings the noise is fine and dandy, and the temperatures are not hotter than my old 8800gtx.

Can we let this go now lol. GTX 580 is already out and it solved these issues.

GTX480 noise levels under load are intolerable without headphones. There’s no good reason to get one with 570/580 options being available.

Agreed; I am amazed at the noise levels on video cards nowadays... I find even the noise on my venerable GTX260 to be intolerable without headphones. But if I want any card that doesn't absolutely suck it has to heh... suck air like no other.

I partially disagree with this statement. From my (admittedly limited) experience with my GTX 480, noise levels on any game i tried were very low, the card was nice and silent on Gothic 4 and Stalker Call of Prypiat at maxed graphic settings.
Presently i dont own a game that can make the 480 go above 71% fan speed.
Noise levels on fan speeds above 80% are bad yes, but i wonder if the card would ever need those fan speeds, especially when the Fermi chip can handle temperatures of 95c easily (according to Nvidia).
Oh and btw for me a $120 price difference was a good reason to chose a 480 over a 580, and right now im very happy with my decision.

71% is noisy as hell; that’s about what mine hits during gaming. That’s ~3000rpm and it's enough to disturb anyone in the same room without headphones. In a solid steel Antec 902 case it sounds like a hairdryer running inside an enclosed metal box.

Or you could've gotten a 570 which is slightly faster and far quieter: http://www.computerbase.de/artikel/...dia-geforce-gtx-570/22/#abschnitt_lautstaerke

The 480 must be WAY worse then the 470. Mine runes at 85ish degrees but the fan speed on auto never goes above 60. It usually hovers around 55ish. This is completely inaudible and as far as im concerned the card never gets loud unless i run Furmark for some reason.

Granted I have a really good aircooling case (FT02), but I still think a lot of the reviews were overblown.

I have a 480. The fan only spins up with Furmark. Otherwise there are no issues. The 5970 does the same thing. There are one of each in my house. If you run furmark, they are both noisy beyond suitable for use. If you do *anything* else, you never notice that they are there.
