I can say from experience, 250w from an AMD card heats the room just as well as 250w from an Nvidia card.

Unless AMD reaches the potential in HPC that GK110 has, than die size is just a disingenuous cop out.

Not IF the cost savings gets passed onto the consumer.

I thought the 7970 already performed well in comparison to titan but since it lacks cuda and open cl hasn't taken off completely they rarely get benched against each other in compute.

I think this GTX780Ti could be based on the GK180, which the Quadro 6000 uses (TDP of 225W!) and also the upcoming K40. I think its a re-spun GK110 to improve yields maybe to enable all the SMXs.

A fully enabled GK110 with slightly higher clocks would likely be my bet on the new release with hopefully price cuts! good times to buy a video card right now.

CUDA is in major HPC; OpenCL simply is not. AMD finds themselves in the same position they're in with servers cpus. They have only a fraction of the market share, and Knight's Corner already eclipsed that last I checked... Which doesn't use OpenCL, so AMD is fighting a seriously huge uphill battle here when it comes to high margin markets.

That said, it isn't Titan GK110 was made for. 7970 and FirePro have no difference except ECC, whereas even Titan is cut down from what you get in the Pro market from Nvidia.

Perf/nm is basically apples to oranges, 7970 vs GK104 vs GK110 shows the folly of such metrics.

GK110 cost isn't much greater than GK104, it is a high margin item because it can be. Which is exactly the market AMD has wanted to penetrate for years now, and the reason why they even came out with GCN in the first place.

This announcement makes me think that the 290x is significantly faster than GTX780. If not they were not even bother to release a new SKU.

I was just thinking the same thing. NVIDIA wants to keep the performance crown. Competition is always good for the consumer.

If true, the question is how would Nvidia know that? Spies?

I would be amazed if NVIDIA and AMD didn't have spies in both camps and/or manufacturers. Maybe not so much stealing trade secrets but most certainly stealing specs and expected performance data.

The biggest reason I think this is that performance has been so close for so long between the two camps and top tier cards have left a lot of performance on the table in each round.

Likewise Nvidia wouldn't be pushing a new card if they didn't know they could beat the R290X.

They probably got performance data the same way AMD did when they sent reviewers boost bios before Nvidia released cards like the 660 Ti.

Or it could be another "Emergency Edition" like they have rushed out in the past to counter what looks like is going to be a very fast and cheaper R290/290x range of cards.:sneaky:

Is it just me, or does it seem like Nvidia always holds back a little tech so they can counter anything AMD releases.

It was widely thought that the GK110 was supposed to be their 680, but the 7970 underperformed, so they released the GK104 instead. Once the 7970GE was beating the 680 too much, they released Titan, then the 780 and refreshes. Now AMD releases a faster card, so they released a full version of the GK110.

Mantle comes the talk of the town, then Nvidia releases news on G-sync.

I get the feeling Nvidia always sits on a few things to counter anything AMD does, rather than delivering everything when they are ready.

The 7970GE was faster than the 680 for quite some time. All of this, "nVidia held back", talk was just that, talk.

I said this before, they know what's going on with the competition before we do. They likely have insiders and such. Almost have to. Most industries do.

This is why anyone who wishes to see the downfall of one company or the other just needs to buy a PS4 and be done with it.

NV could have released this card months ago if AMD had put pressure on them.

Can you imagine where we would be if NV, AMD, and TSMC had all been on top of their game in the last 24 months?

Considering the K6000 was only released end of July what makes you think they could have released the consumer version months ago? Assuming that's what this is.

It will more than likely have 6GB of memory. He stated directly that in SLI it ran three 4K displays just fine/really good in Nvidia Surround.

I don't think a 3GB card could really do that 'well'...or make him so confident in making such a statement.

Pretty exciting times in the world of graphics this time of the year. I doubt the 780 Ti or the 290X will best the Titan across the board. I'll have to sit this one out until something better comes along. Most likely next year when nVidia releases Maxwell.

IMO it will be faster than Titan and cheaper to.

at least Titan specs with the slightly higher clocks of the 780 or better. anything slower would be useless.

Nvidia is probably laughing right now since they have been able to milk the hell out of gk104 and gk110.
