Never buy a i7 for gaming, you are wasting your money as this graph shows clearly, almost no games take advantage of the additional thread (Crysis 2/3 and Metro LL). Glad I saved the 100 and bought the 4690k!! Your always better off spending that $100 on graphic power....

I'll take a moderate CPU + fast GPU over a fast CPU + moderate GPU every single time. Thanks for the numbers BFG!

I keep wanting to upgrade mine until I see benchmarks. Is the 5 series better for gaming with ddr4 even?
go play Crysis 3. You can't even stay about 45 frames per second with a 2500 K.of course many people don't notice this because they don't have a GPU fast enough to get 45 frames per second in the first place but some of us do.if 60 fps doesn't matter then no there is no real reason to upgrade from a 2500 K.

OP has both the 2500K and 4790K at over 55 fps in Crysis 3 with the latter only squeezing out another 3 fps. Unless you run at low resolution, but these days, 1400p and 1600p are pretty common here.

Would love to see how my 2500k at 4.8 ghz does in these circumstances. For a pure gaming machine, the 2500K overclocked is still top tier fps wise.

thats nice but its a fact there are many spots that will drop to 45 and even lower with a 2500k. even at 4.4 I saw drops into low 40s where my oced 4770k stays above 60. even my 4770k hits over 80% usage in parts of Crysis 3. and that can be doing nothing more than standing still. I have spent a TON of timing testing that game.

but right here shows a clear example of how HT helps. with a 2700k he drops to 46 fps just standing still where with HT on he is at 60 fps and gpu limited. and there are more cpu limited parts of the game. http://maldotex.blogspot.com.es/2013/02/hyperthreading-and-real-custom-graphics.html

I upgraded to 4770k and I am very glad I did. Crysis 3 is much better playing game and I can use vsync now since I can maintain 60 fps for 99% of the game now. also some other games were nearly tapping out my oced 2500k and I was screwed if my pc needed cpu power for anything else while gaming. with a 4770k I can get much better multi tasking performance and never have to worry about shutting stuff down just to play a game for a little bit.

So why not get the non-K version? better resale value?
The 2500 you mean? It was only a few dollars more, plus I knew XMP would work. I've heard of cases where XMP was locked out in certain non-K scenarios due to lacking memory dividers.

it's never that simple, how can you be so sure that his test represent the worst CPU bound situations during the game?

Eurogamer had a Devil's Canyon comparison captured with FCAT both i5/i7 at 4.6Ghz
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8vGwz35Hqs
obviously it's locked a 60 max, so the difference is not apparent most of the time, but if you look carefully under some conditions you have 4.6Ghz i5 at 50 or high 40s while even the stock i7 (4.2Ghz with turbo) managed to stay locked at 60, in other case the OC i7 was at 50 while the OC i5 at 40 or something... 4.8GHz 2500K is slower than the haswell i5 4.6GHz, the 4790K (4.2Ghz with turbo) even with no OC should be able to show an advantage in some parts of this game.
