I wanna get an Ultra now that the price is under $300. I'm running a PIII 1 ghz on an Asus CUV4X. It uses the VIA chipset. I remember someone, somewhere, on one of the many boards, saying they couldn't run the apg in 4x. Is this true?
Hmm... I've played a lot with ASUS CUV4X where I work and they all support AGP4X... I've tried also GeForce2 GTS with them, and it was working well, so I don't see why a Ultra wouldn't work at AGP4X with that... However, as it's a VIA chipset, you must be SURE to download the lastest drivers at VIA.com or to a fan-site like viahardware.com because it contains the AGPGART you need to run at full speed the board.
Usually, some ppl have issues running AGP4x and Fast Writes on, the problem is more often than not, solved by turning off Fast Writes. However I have to say that 4x has a negligable than 2x, it's nowhere near double the speed. So if you can't run it, don't worry.
Well, AGP4X can do a major difference in HEAVILLY texturised games when a large amount of textures must reside in RAM... Then again, it's mostly 3D Design OpenGL stuff that uses that much textures, so you shouldn't really worry about AGP4X.
