Geforce1 DDR vs. Radeon DDR

Depends on which type of DDR Radeon. The 64 MB Radeon VE or LE?

If you have to choose between the DDR GeF and the DDR Radeon (depending on which one) get the Radeon. I suggest you get a GeF2 Pro instead of the DDR Radeon. They will cost the same, but the Pro will kick it's ass.

nearly every Radeon will beat a Geforce 1 DDR, except the Radeon VE, when it comes to performance.

Power draw for Geforce 1 cards is fairly high (I heard 18 watts per chip), so you might want to think about that if you're running a Socket 7 system.

Finally feature wise, the Radeon series cards beats the Geforce 1 in nearly every way (I can't think of any that the GF wins, but I'm not about to say anything stupid).

you should consider a GF2 Pro if you are able to get your hands on it. Performance wise, it handily beats the Radeon in almost every situation, but feature wise, they're about the same (Radeon wins for hardware DVD acceleration of decoding).

just be sure when buying an nVidia based card that you know what you're doing when it comes to drivers, and 2D Quality (which could mean higher prices when looking for a specific card). AFAIK, there aren't any special issues with nVidia cards that require patches for the OS or anything, so they're typical in that area!

finally, when it comes to drivers, Radeon's are GREAT for Windows 9x, and pretty good for 2K (hasn't been a comparison in a while AFAIK, but it appears to me that they're doing well). XP drivers still don't exist I think, and Linux drivers for Radeon cards are too scarce for my tastes. nVidia drivers work around the whole PC, so basically you won't have to worry too much about drivers not being available for your OS.

I think i need to clarify, i already have a Geforce 1 DDR, have had it for a long time, and was considering the upgrade. Just wondering if it was worth it to buy now. Also wondering how dvd's look on the tv-out

The cheapest i can find the GF2 Pro is around $110.00

Go to pricewatch.com and search "GeForce 2 GTS". You will find one for $104 (includes s&h and tax). The $72 card you quoted is before s&h and tax. After that, the Radeon will be $86.

32 MB DDR Radeon = $86
32 MB DDR GeForce 2 GTS Pro = $104

Spend the extra $18 and get the GTS, it kicks the DDR Radeon's ass.

Actually shipping at newegg for the Radeon is $8 taking me to a grand total of $80

You forgot tax.

Just make sure that's a Pro and not a GTS, since those are different cards, and there's not really such as thing as a "GTS Pro", it's one way or the other, never both.

If you already have the GeForce DDR, I don't think you'd see a great deal of improvement going to the Radeon DDR 32MB...

and nobody chooses the first store on pricewatch.com (unless it's newegg, of course).

I had an nvidia geforce3 and returned it after a week, that may say something. I'm sure you will get more FPS with a g2pro, but is that what you want? I'm thinking the radeon will give you better 2d quality/3d colors/image quality, and you may render that more important (as I do) then playing a game at 200 FPS when you're happy with it at 70. That will chagne soon of course when newer games come out, but at this time I would go with a radeon...personally.

<< I mean the 32MB version, not the le version. Newegg has it for $72.00 here. >>

The LE version IS a 32 mb DDR version...

To clarify, Newegg is selling two Radeon 32DDR cards right now... on is the LE which has a reduced clockspeed 144 mhz and disabled Hyper Z in OpenGL mode. The other is simply labled Radeon 32DDR and is priced nearly the same and is labled as having HyperZ enabled. There has been some discussion about this on the forum. Some folks who have purchased the latter say it has HyperZ but is still underclocked (156 mhz) with respect to the Standard full retail Radeon 32DDR which is clocked at 166 mhz (or is it 184 mhz?).

Regardless, both of these cards are essentially the same. There is an article on the LE which documents how it can be tweaked via a registry edit to enable HyperZ in OpenGL and bring the clock rate back up to the retail version. Once these two tweaks are implimented, the LE performs the same as the full retail version which used to cost twice the price. The other card which appears to be labled as the full retail version evidently is an underclocked version of the retail card.

Personally I'd rather have a GeForce256 DDR than a 32MB Radeon DDR.

Those first gen DDR cards are still damn fast IMHO......

I would hate to see the look on your face when running 3dmark 2k+1. I owned a 3dprophet sdr (hercules) and because of that card its gonna be a while before I buy nvidia again. I bought that card to play 2 excellent games: Quake3 and Unreal Tournament. It was on a 440bx w/ P2 450. The drivers for that card were SO BAD that only one driver set worked for each game. If I wanted to play q3 I had to have that driver installed; If I wanted to play unreal tournament I had to uninstall driver; reboot; set vga video; reboot; install different driver ;reboot; play unreal tournament....etc. It was hell. I'm one of those guys who runs his systems 24/7. In fact I have a Radeon and I haven't rebooted since sometime in June. My point is nvidia releases drivers to fix what their previous driver broke. I prefer reliability, image quality, and features to a higher frame rate I can't even notice.

If you are happy with your Geforce DDR then KEEP IT! A GF2 pro will be fast, but cards that cost $110 with that chipset have to cut corners. You may get 150fps, but it'll look muddy because of a cheap vga filter (worse than what you have currently). I say wait a couple of months (2-3) and look into a gf3/Radeon 8500. They should both be down (200 a piece? ) and it's not like anything new is out that'll really tax what you have right now.

A Radeon LE isn't an upgrade from a Geforce 1 DDR. They are about the same in performance. You want to upgrade to something significantly better like a Geforce 2 Pro.
