My boss got me a Samsung 225BW 22" monitor to go along with a new Dell (dual core..all that jazz, some pci-e grapchis card). Problem is we are busy right now and we don't have time to set up the new Dell to the network and all right now so i just took the monitor out of the box to use with my old Dell.

Here lies the problem. This older Dell has a Geforce4 MX 440 card (way out dated i know) but i can't seem to get this card to display a resolution higher then 1280x1024....the monitor supports 1680x1050. I have downloaded the newest drivers from Nvidia all ready but that did not work either. I also went into the advaced tap of the graphics card and manually made a 1680x1050 resolution at 60 Hertz but when i applied it the screen came up warped looking just like every other resolution i tried over 1280x1024.

Anyone know if this card just can not display such a resolution or is there a way to force it to do the resolution correctly? Thanks for any help

Find out who made that one and go to that web site, or just start trying various card companies' sites looking for anyone still showing data on any of the MX cards (the 4000 was the last made, and is still available NIB). It's based on some ancient core silicon from the GF2 era (6-7 years for graphics is an eternity). You're probably lucky it can even get to the 1024 by 768 level, though.

It's not becasue the card isn't powerful enough, it's because it has a single link dvi connection. The maz resolution over the digital port is 1280x 1024 at 60Hz. If you use analog it should be 2048x1536

... which is exactly because these cards have a problem going higher. Single-link DVI reaches up to 1920x1200 at 60 Hz if implemented correctly - which it isn't in our case here.

On VGA, even these old NVidia chips should be able to produce a signal at 1680x1050. It might be too washed out to give sharp detail, but there is no total loss of signal integrity like on DVI.
