I saw an ad this weekend for an ATI 9550 (Dominator) for 49.99.

I have an old G3 Ti200 that has served me well. You guys think it's worth the $50 for an upgrade? The highest res game I play is usually WC3.

Don't forget that in the future you might not be able to play al games with a TI4200. For example you won't be able to play Battlefield 2 with a ti4200 bcause you need a DX9 card.

I know my 9600 XT was easily two to three times faster in most modern games than my friends ti4400.

There is a big difference between a 9500 Pro/9600 xt than the slow 9550. Even if it's performance is close to the regular 9600 then it wouldn't even beat a Ti4200.

Someone posted in another thread that you need a PS 1.4 card as a minimum to run BF2, and the gf4 cards are only PS 1.3. If this is true, then even a slower radeon 8500 will run the game (at low setting most likely), but the gf4 will not run it at all.

The Ti4200 will definately not beat out a 9550. The 9550 can handle DX9 tasks in HL2 pretty well with a modern PC, and as far as ti4200 vs 9550 in DX8, the 9550 is quite a bit faster. I know this, I have both cards.

The 9550 is about 3x as fast as the 9200, just a tiny bit slower then the 9600PRO

The Ti4200 is about the same speed as a 9500Pro(not the castrated 9550). If you enable AF then the R9500Pro crushed it, although in IQ it was far behind. Ti4200 is certainly better overall then the R9550.

Edit- Forgot to mention, I owned both and ran them for quite a while. Ended up having to get rid of the R9500Pro as the drivers were rather unuseable at the time(currently running a R9800Pro).

Prove it because I owned a Sapphire R9600 which is faster than a R9550 and it was usually slower than my MSI GF4 Ti4200 8x with games!

You guys are giving the 4200 way too much credit here. Read this article and compare the 9600pro to a gf4200
http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=1904

The 9550 is like 60-70% as fast as a 9600pro, so it's probably a tie with the 4200, but the 9600pro beats the 4200 in most cases by a good amount, especially when you use any kind of AA/AF. And the 9500pro would absolutely kill a 4200, even beats a 9600pro, because it had 8 pipes, compared to 4 for the rest of these cards.

Anyway, no good gameplay with AA/AF activated on these cards, so those test are meaningless, since there are poor framerates with both cards (9600Pro and ti4200). Only consider no AA/AF benchmarks in which the TI is better overall than 9550. The 9500 Pro is not the same doesn't enter in this disscusion because it is is a 9700 derivative with 8 pipelines and is much more expensive than a Ti4200 or a 9550. The 9550 cannot beat 9600 non pro which is most cases slower than ti4200.
