Geil? Kingston? Corsair?

I've noticed that Geil ddr sells for less than kingston or corsair.

I'm refering in particular to the 512 pc3200 (2x256) kits.

I don't know how strongly people feel about this, and i hope i don't start a flame war, but is premium geil ram just as good as kingston or corsair?

I'm building this:
Abit Is7
2.4C

and I may try to overclock a bit.

Also, if I run 2x256 in dual channel mode, do I have 256mb of ram or 512 mb of ram?

Thanks

You have 512. Dual channel just makes more efficient use of the memory bandwidth. I would personally avoid Geil as I've heard a lot of problems on these forums. Personally I decided to go with Mushkin and it happened to be a sale + coupon so I got 1GB of PC3200 Blue (Cas 2.5) for 148 shipped.

Id get crucial if you are looking to save money. If not, get Kingston or corsair. Corsair probably performs the best. They are both about same price so...

I am never going Kingston again.

Using a 2.4C and Abit IC7 - it wouldn't run at stock speeds. Got some Corsair XMS3500 and I am a happy camper running at 3GHz.

i would go XMS or hyperX, whichever is cheaper. OCZ is good too but for the same price or less you can get XMS/hyperX. golden dragon looks promising but GeIL has a long way to go to improve their reputation

buffalo at .newegg

i'm trying them out..... $99 for 512mb PC466 winbond ch-5 chips, same stuff corsair uses in their PC3500.

gotta a pair of the 512mb DDR466 and a P4 2.4C coming. i'll compare them to my 2x512mb corsair PC3200, which ever is slower goes in the shuttle XPC.

I haven't heard much about their memory since the days when Intel's 815E chipset was popular and using PC133 SDRAM. Are you OCing your Mushkin memory? And if so, do you have to up the voltage much to gain stability?

Also, not to change the topic of this thread, but can someone add their opinion on Kingston HyperX? I hear lots of talk about Corsair, Crucial, Geil, and OCZ, but i rarely hear any talk about kingston RAM these days. A few have said it is comparable to Corsair quality, but i'd like a few more opinions before i go ahead and choose one over the other. i'll be OCing it on a Gigabyte 7N400 Pro (nforce2 ultra 400 chipset) mainboard.

I'm hesitant on HyperX. Their newest pc3200 hasn't been the winbond chips that it used to use. I know on default voltage I couldn't even get into windows with 400mhz, with any timings. I'm running 400 with 2.72 volts now, with 2-3-3-7 timings, that is the tightest I can get them. Still a bit away from advertised specs, but close enough I guess. At these timings I stiull can't pass an hour of Prime, but my real system runs fine, so no worries. If I relax the timings, prime goes fine.

I dunno but I currently use
Kingston HyperX PC3500 DDR434 512mb x 2 / It OC's great

I would prefer Corsair XMS Twin pack any day if I could afford it.

I built my friend a system with the GEIL 512MB(2x256MB) PC-3500 (433MHz) Dual DDR RAM, 6 Layer Lower Noise PCB Copper Heat Spreader. I OC'd it for him just a little. Ran stable and that ram benchmarked past my own HyperX ram.

I never tried OCZ but I heard some good things about them.

Best bang for the buck would be GEIL if you don't OC that much.

You wan't quality go with Kingston HyperX, its affordable.

It you want top notch OC and quality, get Corsair XMS, only if your a big baller =)

People over at HardForum seem to love GeIL. Just make sure you get Golden Dragon. In regards to Buffalo, I've heard they're HUGE over in certain areas of Asia. Don't here much about it over here, bad or good, however. I ordered 2x512MB GeIL Golden Dragon PC3200. It seems to be a crapshoot. I've read bad and I've read good reviews. I'll be sure to post on here how it goes...1gig for $199 shipped after all these RAM price raises is insane if it runs well...

i'm actually building a system for my roomie. He's a gamer on a budget, but at the same time i made it clear to him that if he wants me to OC it even a little, memory just isn't something you can be cheap with or you'll be sacrificing stability and reliability. i'm not quite sure at this point, but he might be willing to spend the $133 on 512MB (2 x 256MB) TwinX Corsair PC3200, which i guess would be the best if he's willing to get it...that's the cheapest i could find it. Otherwise it seems that the general concensus says that the next best thing is HyperX (dollar and performance wise)? Also, would it be worth it to just get two 256MB sticks of XMS3200 (not TwinX) and run it in dual channel mode if i could save a few bucks? I mean the only real difference is that the twinX sticks have been tested together, but theoretically two 256MB sticks of XMS3200 are identical and should run together no problem, right?

Geil memory is fine if your not oc/ing to the extreme.
I ordered my new system a pentium 4 w/HyperX pc 3500
I was going to try the Geil but Gigabyte recomended the hyperX for the board I'm getting.
Geil dragon is great ram.

by the way, two more questions:

1) do i really have to buy "dual channel" RAM if i plan to enable a second channel, or will two identical sticks of DDR do fine?

2) i have a 512MB Samsung stick of PC2700 w/ samsung TCB3 chips on it. if i upgrade to an Abit IS7 (865PE chipset) without utilizing a second memory channel, will this memory work?
