Branching off from the General VR thread:

Two big movements as of October 1st, 2023:

1. Meta (Facebook) is releasing the Meta Quest 3 on October 10th, 2023. $500 for 128GB & $650 for 512GB:

2. Apple is releasing the Apple Vision Pro starting at $3,500 in early 2024:

Augmented Reality is going to open a lot of neat doors to fun games, productivity enhancements, communications, etc. Great news feed here:

The only thing is that when your wearing the headset it looks nothing like those pictures.
Its like your looking though a pair of screens and they put an object in front of you.
Its so misleading, but at the same time its very difficult to describe the exact experience you get without trying it.

at least they are not going the apple route and trying to pretend its like having a 100 inch monitor sitting 5 foot away from you experience, because everyone 10/10 would rather have the real 100 foot screen 5 foot away in real life.

I'm curious to try both the Quest 3 & the Apple Vision Pro headsets. I have a his & hers VR setup (Quest 1 & Quest 2). Tempted to sell one to get a v3 for AR...price is better than Apple's $3.5k asking price lol.

Personally i think i am done with VR headsets period.
I dont like Quests because now i think they require you to have a Meta account.
Im not really an apple user, so you'd have to give the vision pro for free for me to get one.
And after getting burned on the Rift S, and Valve Index, i am honestly burnt out.

Id rather wait for good VR glasses now and ones where i can go full wireless to my PC over wifi6 or wifi7, and not have latency issues. That would probably be the only way id go with wearing a headset again.

Those muzzles masks are the most ridiculous things I've ever seen. It's like BDSM while gaming. The only thing missing is the leash.

I've really enjoyed my time with my VR equipment! My only real complaint is the lack of rollout of good games on a regular basis.

For me, VR games have the very specific feeling of being a "re-run", so once I finish something like Alyx or Budget Cuts, playing it again feels a bit too familiar to really enjoy it, whereas I can always go back & plan SNES Mario and have fun with it.

The Vision looks really cool, but I can't imagine shelling out $3.5k just for a headset. I just can't see getting $3,500 worth of value out of it. I could sell my Quest 2 for maybe $150, which would knock the 512gb Quest 3 down to $500 (plus an additional $130 for the "elite" headset with battery), but that's like, Playstation 5 territory lol.

Philips Hue AR lightning integration. Turn on the lights by:

1. Walking near them (proximity)
2. Looking at them (gaze)
3. With an AR flashlight (AR directional)
4. With an AR torch (AR proximity)

Your house would look like Stranger Things lol:

sigh you remember what happened when people tried to get pokemon in AR, and ended up walking into traffic?

I predict this will be a lot worse....
A minecraft looking car isn't scary until you realize it aint a game.

I haven't been using my OG or 2 much for newer games or PC gaming. Still sweating in the OG for Thrill of the Fight and Beat Saber mostly. I did pick up Iron Man VR on sale to kill a few hours with. Being the Marvel nerd I am.

The Quest 2 having a better screen, leaves it dedicated to media consumption. I have been going through Deep Space Nine on Amazon Prime VR, on season 6 now, and the upscaling and big movie screen illusion make it a 10/10 experience.

I haven't tried Prime VR, thanks for the tip!

I'm probably going to sell my Q1 & pick up a Q3 this year. I LOVE VR, but the dearth of new games is what's killed it for me. I always enjoy using it, but because it's a whole-body experience, you really need a lot more fresh content on a regular basis than you do old games. Like, I still binge stuff like Mario & the Half-Life series (including Portal!) over Thanksgiving every year, despite having it played it for like 20 years in a row lol. VR is fantastic, but I get experience-fatigue & don't really want to re-play games because it feels so much like a re-run for some reason. I'm hoping AR injects some life into the experience!

I think VR needs better sims. Like how about GTA in VR where you look at people walking around, cars passing by and things happening? Or a nature sim with animals roaming around?
