Okay so I'm running into this issue where I lag every 4s. The screen just sort of stutters for a second no matter what I'm doing and then it picks back up. If I'm on youtube the sound will cut out and the video will stop briefly. If I'm on wow my character will lag forward briefly. If I'm just chilling on my desktop and slow dragging my mouse across the screen the cursor will skip (again every 4s)

I did do a couple of part swap outs recently. Here is what I was running:

Intel dg965wh
Core 2 6300
2gB cheap ddr2 4200 ram
ATI 1900XTX
550W psu
2x75gB raptors in raid 0

And here's what I'm running now (new parts bolded)

Asus p5q pro turbo
Core 2 6300
4gB gskill pc8500
ATI 1900 XTX
550W psu
2x75gB raptors in raid 0

I have all the latest drivers for chipset, video, audio etc. Memtest hasn't found anything. Chkdsk didn't find any problems. It's a FRESH windows install so I don't think it's virus based.

The only remotely weird issue I noticed while putting this setup together is the asus board detected the memory as ddr800 instead of 1066, but I just had to bump the voltage up (it was defaulted to 1.8V) to 2.1V and set the speed manually myself.

Any ideas what else I could check?

I'm assuming the issue wasn't there until after the parts swap with the clean install of Windows.

One possibility is that you've got something installed, or a service that's running, that is regularly polling the system for some reason. For example, one of the first things to do with a fresh XP install is to kill the Indexing Service. Another example is shovelware: the latest installer for my TV tuner forcibly installed a Ulead app that caused my system to lock up every 50 minutes, even tho' it wasn't running something in systray or anything...uninstalling just the Ulead app resolved the issue. Your parts list is really sparse...got anything else hooked up to the machine that's not listed? There could be a piece of hardware regularly polling the system.

It's also possible your machine was compromised. For example, if your fresh install was XP Gold and you immediately went to Windows Update, the machine has already been compromised before WGA finishes installing, much less the service packs and criticals.

Running HijackThis would be a good start in your investigation to find out exactly what is loading up with the OS.

This could a video card issue. I have seen allot of threads where people 19xx cards are going bad.

What brand and model is the PSU?

As for the RAM it is going to run at 800MHz untill you start OCing the system. Without knowing the PSU i'm not going to reccomend OCing the system just yet.

I'd be surprised if I got a virus so quickly. The system did it after a fresh install before I even had the internet hooked up.

I swapped in a 6600GT and it's doing the same thing so that rules out the video card. I'm running to the store now to pick up a psu and I'll post the results of that.

The PSU is an Xfinity 550w. I am confused by your comment of the memory being OC'd if it runs past 800mhz? The memory I bought is GSkill DDR2 1066 so why would I be overclocking it if I run it at the rated speed (1066)?

edit: tried a new psu, didnt help

However...I reformatted again and this time I used the drivers off the CD instead of asus.com and the hitching issue is completely gone =o

I'm going to stay away from the newest drivers as long as possible I guess..
