Make this quick and painless for me, new system

What is a good graphics card to run SC2 @ 1080P resolution and smooth gameplay at "at least" medium settings?

Also please recommend CPU/RAM requirements for SC2...

Requirements or recommended?

Your system looks great except the 8800 is getting old. I would say you'll get full graphics with a Radeon HD 5770, but the best thing for longevity would be the NVidia Geforce GTX460 1GB.

If you want an upgrade for CPU and Ram (not needed for SC2) then the only significant performance increase would come from an i7 (860 or 870 depending on price gap) a 1156 motherboard and 8GB DDR3.

People nowadays are building systems specific for Starcraft with the i5 760, Geforce 460 1GB, 4GB DDR3 1333 4GB, and a 650W PSU. These upgrades aren't worth it for you however, as the i5 with 4GB RAM isn't all that much improvement over the Core 2 Quad with 4GB DDR2.

I run SC2 at 1080p on "high" settings on an HD 5670 (with i3 530 and 4GB DDR3). Ultra is just the slightest bit choppy. Any of the 57xx or GTX 4xx cards will give you Ultra without breaking a sweat.

OP: I'm running SC2 on a box similar to your HTPC box, except with an Athlon II x4 630 and an Radeon 5750, at 1920x1080 on a 23" monitor, Ultra settings in-game.

My spare/old box has a 9800GT and an E7400 with Ultra settings, but running only 1440x900 on a 19" monitor.

Really, I don't think SC2 needs an uber powerful box to run decently, i.e., you don't need an i7 or Phenom II x6, or a HD58xx or GTX4xx, but if you got the $$$ then why not, right?

Your system should be able to handle low/medium as-is. The only thing really holding you back is the GPU. The 5770 and GTX 460 1GB are both good choices depending on how much you want to spend.

I run on SC2 with 1600x900 resolution on medium settings for everything graphically related, except Texture Quality (which is set to ultra). Anything relating to CPU is turned off or low though, because my CPU is outdated and only dual core. (AMD Athlon x 2 Windsor 5600+, overclocked to 3.12 ghz). I run an nVidia 9600GT 1 GB from PNY, the CPU above, and 2 GB of DDR2 RAM on Windows XP.

W/o AA? Anything modern w/ 1GB--I'm often using 700MB+ VRAM. I would think a HD 5750, or GTS 250, would be a minimum, just to make it worthwhile as a proper replacement for a 8800 GT. If you have a significant budget, and want something you can sit on for awhile, like your 8800 GT, go ahead and get a GTX 460. All that said, if you left texture detail at low or medium, your 8800 GT might even be fine.
Also please recommend CPU/RAM requirements for SC2...
For ultra? An i5 or i7 quad. For medium? Your C2Q is fine. Most of those old C2Qs could get 3GHz or near it without even bumping up Vcore, too. Like AMD with their Phenom IIs, making them go fast was easy--keeping them all under TDP was the hard part. If your RAM is 667 or faster, at least give it a try. It's fine as it is, but it's bound to have a few hundred more MHz in it, without overvolting, and SC2 could use that.

I've got a C2D@3.2, 8GB DDR2 800, and GTX 460 1GB. I play at 1680x1050, at medium, high texture, and low post-processing (default for that is off), and have 4xAA forced. Usually, it stays pegged at 60, but can get down into the low/mid 30s on eye candy maps, with carriers coming my way. It's a smooth 30+FPS, when it comes to that, though--no slide shows to be found. GPU utilization is rarely above 50%, too.

I run SC2 at 1080p on "high" settings on an HD 5670 (with i3 530 and 4GB DDR3). Ultra is just the slightest bit choppy. Any of the 57xx or GTX 4xx cards will give you Ultra without breaking a sweat.
My GTX 460 can't give me good worst-case performance on high, even w/o AA. My GPU utilization is also lower on high than medium, where my CPUs stay pretty much maxed on either setting. It's your i3 that deserves the credit.

I doubt even ultra would require an i5/i7 over a C2Q. Keep your current setup and get a GTX460 1GB. That's the best way to get SC2 up and running.

I run the same settings with mine with my system below.
