I guess Minecraft is one game I'll never understand why people consider it fun. I could do a mario maker for a few hours but that's about the extent of it.

Have you actually played it? The graphics are stupid & the gameplay is lame...until you get hooked. It's basically an imagination-based game like Legos. If you were into Legos as a kid, it's the same idea, only with day/night cycles, monsters, crafting tables to make swords & torches, farming, multi-player, etc. I didn't touch it for years, but once I did, it was easy to see why people spent so much time in it...it's more of a creative outlet than a game, really.

Yes I checked it out before and yes I hate it. I am curious about the Climb from Crytek, I noticed a scene where it shows paraglider's going by and made me wonder if that's something the game features? I'd love to paraglide in VR.

*oops, I meant wing suit, not paraglider

It's ok, not everybody is Minecraft-style player. I also gave it a try and just couldn't understand how anyone would consider it fun, but then I'm not a builder. I suppose I don't have any bit of creativity in my brain.

I'm with ya. The thing that annoys me most about Minecraft is that it is ALMOST a game that I would have really adored. I remember when it first started getting hyped when it had like 50,000 players and I wondered what it would grow into. But then it had 500,000 players then a million, then 5 million, and I feel like it might have destroyed their need to make it into something. I assumed it was going to become like a Tower Defence game but you make your own bases, then things start attacking in waves and you have to build epic castles and then start putting defences on them like cannons and archers and whatnot. I would have loved that, but all they did was add more items to craft.

I think Multiplayer makes it a lot more interesting because you can apparently attack each others buildings and stuff, but I need more 'game' aspects for me to enjoy something like that. Like even some basic capture the flag mechanics or something. I just need something that hooks me and I never found that :/

I did play several hours and make some cool structures though but I just wished there was more to it.

Visually for sure but I am skeptical of how fun the actual gameplay is. It's apparently more about seeing how fast and efficiently you can climb which doesn't sound that fun to me but it does have some amazing views.
What it needs is wing suit flying but I haven't been able to find any info on it so I guess it doesn't.

Damnit, I just want to use VR to fly. Someone needs to make a bird simulator lol

The Climb is decent but not worth the $50 they are charging. The gameplay is OK with a gamepad, but it's very disconnecting and immersion breaking compared to Vive games that use motion controls. I've completed about half the climbs, and it doesn't really pull me to play more.

You unlock gear which isn't exciting at all and as far as I can tell provides no benefits, just visual. They could have easily given different gloves stats, like more stamina/grip, faster dirt clearing, immune to toxic holds, stuff like that.

Graphically it's a let down which I did not expect at all. I am fairly certain it's not 1.0 resolution, I think it's scaled down to improve visual aspects in other ways and keep fps up. And there are no options to really change anything, there is only a "High Quality" check box. Everything is so blurry in comparison to other games. I would have much preferred it to run clear (well, as clear as you can get from the Rift), over other visuals. Especially considering the low resolution of VR already. For example you'll see guys in wingsuits fly by which is cool and all but when you look at them they are mostly a blur/blob. When you look off into the scenery it's just so fuzzy it looks kinda crap. Also cables/wires you see, if you aren't really close they are really aliased and look terrible.

You should check out Omega Agent for the GearVR...you get to fly a jetpack around, it's awesome

I think you shouldn't say that. Everyone has creativity. Minecraft may not be your outlet, but don't close yourself off like that!

You might regret cancelling that Rift.

So this is interesting:

Oculus Rift comes to 48 Best Buy stores May 7th

On May 7th, Oculus will launch their brand new retail experience in 48 Best Buy stores across the country, with more locations expected to follow later this summer.

As you might expect from an in-store experience, Oculus plans to include a range of VR demos to show off the hardware, starting with the Oculus Dreamdeck we played around with in our official review. For something even more immersive, users will also be able to take on the heights of Crytek's The Climb and explore the alien worlds of Farlands, all without ever leaving the safety of their local Best Buy.

If in-person purchases aren't your thing, a small number of Rifts will also be available for purchase online through Amazon and Microsoft starting this Friday, May 6th at noon ET. Expect supplies to be scarce while the company catches up on pre-orders, which have already been experiencing some shipping delays.

Speaking of which, anyone who already ponied up for their Oculus Rift hardware will be able to purchase the Rift in-store and keep their pre-order benefits like the EVE: Valkyrie Founder's Pack and front-of-the-line status for Oculus Touch controllers. All you need to do is go to your order status on Oculus' site, add a note that you've already bought the hardware at a retail location and the company will cancel the pre-order.

Well that's interesting. One of the reasons I canceled my Rift pre-order was because they pushed it out to June 30th. Now they're saying you can simply walk into Best Buy, purchase one, and keep the pre-order games & have them cancel your pre-order. Or snag it on Amazon on Friday.

Thanks, Oculus.

Edit: A lot of unhappy people on Reddit too:

The handling of the Rift launch is one of the worst product launches I've seen in terms of honoring the customer, communication, and fulfillment. I can't think of anything that really went right.

I bet Arma3 could make something like that quite easily. I make a lot of flying missions with the editor but I am sure with modding it could be made into a Superman type experience. I'd love that if I had VR.

Which is weird because they're backed by Facebook, which is a huge company, but then you realize how Facebook continually botches their privacy rollouts on their Facebook product & well, there you go

Rift has been a disappointment. They completely missed the mark and the hype has passed. I was in the second allotment and haven't heard anything since early April. My friend was in the first batch and he finally got his about a week ago, well over a month late. Frankly, I don't care anymore.

Are you aware there is a ton of aftermarket stuff (mods) available for Minecraft? Someone had a Tower Defense server setup a few years ago:

I wouldn't mind the delays so much if (1) they shipped ALL pre-orders before putting them in B&M (seriously, what the heck? Wait 5 months & then it's like a slap in the face to have anyone waltz down to Best Buy or hop on Amazon & get their Rift a full 2 months before your now 6-month preorder), and (2) there wasn't competition available - and not only competition, but better competition with the Lighthouses & Touch controllers. And the ability to run the Rift games through Revive Injector

I think it was dumb to give away a ton of them to kick starter backers. No one was expecting that and it set back the entire launch.

A smarter idea:

1. Give away free Rifts to Kickstarter backers (good PR move)
2. Ship out Rifts to pre-orders, then give a $100 refund (good PR move)
3. Put up at B&M and Amazon once the buzz is out

I don't think they needed the good PR from kickstarter. That was a quick headline that everyone forgot after a week. They needed to get them out to paying customers before Vive instead of having the customer's $600 preorder lingering. If they still wanted the kickstarter headline then I'd think they could have said kickstarter backers would be getting a free rift after the preorders were fulfilled or they could have given a coupon.

Got my Vive yesterday. Had never used any VR platform before firing up the Vive last night. It is definitely far from perfect, but man, it's incredible. Once you put on the head set, you pretty much stop thinking about the technology and just become immersed. Can't really say that about any other tech purchase I've made in the last decade.

Also, side note: ordered the Vive months after the Rift and more than a month after Vive pre-orders opened and it still came a month before my Rift's shipping estimate. Will be cancelling the Rift pre-order. Can't really imagine not having motion tracked controllers, and I think the optics are similar enough that there's no reason to have both, even for seated experiences. Will re-evaluate for Gen2, but for now, I'll be in the Vive ecosystem. Hard to fathom how botched the Rift launch was. It seems to me they've gone from creating a new category to an also-ran - pretty much over night.
